Oh, poor little Kinda. At least let's help her feel comfortable on her birthday.

Sounds about where I am. I had 2 for the same problem about 18 years ago but although the problem got much better, it never entirely went away. And then recurred this year. 1 is scary but it should be more permanent

The BBC Quatermass and the Pit. Itโ€™s pretty much perfect. Andre Morell is superb, and they did wonders with the limited production values and effects available

You know what Iโ€™d really like to see? A mid-size 3-door hatchback with a completely basic model, maybe optional alloys

Without the sequel trilogy being commissioned we probably wouldn't have got Rogue One

The remains of an Antarctic researcher, Dennis โ€˜Tinkโ€™ Bell, have been found after 65 years, among rocks exposed by a receding glacier.

Dennis was a 25 year-old meteorologist working for the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) - the predecessor of British Antarctic Survey.

I wish more people would point out that harming trans women under the pretext of protecting women is specifically harming women (trans women) instead of implicitly accepting the framing that trans women are outside womanhood

email to me:

Our disabled son has CP and bladder spasms so urologist is recommending Botox treatments and we read your article and are concerned about the presence of mRNA in the Botox.

Is mRNA in all brands?
How can we know if it is in there?
Is there a safe brand you recommend?

He has to have this so what do we do?

Thanks

my reply:

personally, i'd recommend you follow the advice of your doctor. but what do i know, i'm just a random person you emailed. I have no more formal education around botox than the author Naomi Wolf, whose advice I assume you were actually seeking. but since you emailed me, my suggestion is that you listen to your kid's urologist, who is a trained medical professional, rather than seeking out medical advice from someone with an english degree and a history of making significant errors in her research.

best of luck!

a specific skill I've developed over the past ~20 years is crafting responses to emails sent to me, but intended for that other Naomi Wolf

Even after everything, part of me finds it hard to believe they are *this* morally bad and *this* bad at politics. Truly toxic combo

I remember how after less than one year they were frequently declining to put anyone up for interview at all. I disagreed with it on accountability grounds but taking ministersโ€™ time to defend the indefensible was a lose-lose, and failing to respond often took the sting out of the story

11.08.2025 13:40 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

As an ex public sector comms person, I think it was utterly foolish to put anyone up for interview. I generally took the view that you should put people up whenever you had the opportunity, but the PA policy is so blatantly stupid and wrong that going on TV to defend it is asking for trouble

I donโ€™t know though, he was so personally forceful. Itโ€™s possible that there would have been a similar influence by US sf but probably across multiple editors and journals

Something I feel very strongly about - and which I think is a precondition for the academic study of religion, really - is that we shouldn't mock or make fun of the way any other human being worships. Who are we to say what happens when humans interact with the divine?

11.08.2025 13:21 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 215    ๐Ÿ” 26    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 43    ๐Ÿ“Œ 8

Zionists are still trying to pretend Israel isnโ€™t deliberately hunting journalists, as though we didnโ€™t all see the IDF directly bomb the state broadcasting building in the heart of Tehran.

And as Scalzi points out, Campbell was essentially the dominant force over the golden age

11.08.2025 13:20 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

As far as Campbell is concerned it almost certainly wouldnโ€™t exist as the genre we understand today. There were largely unrelated strands of sf from the UK, Europe, USSR but they were generally more literary and cerebral and without the pull of US development it probably would have remained niche

Today's in Japan it's Mountain Day (ๅฑฑใฎๆ—ฅ, Yama no Hi) so I thought I'd put together a small collection of my favourite prints featuring Mount Fuji, Japan's most iconic sacred mountain.
