anyway as i was saying, got my arcanist up to Arkovia and after a truly harrowing start her momentum as a DPS monster to match the first toon seems to be building

sided with Kymon's Chosen in my first playthru so i could just. do it and get it over with. shockingly the hypocritical religious fundies in an apocalypse failed to win me, famed necromancer-enjoyer Dee, over, but at least if i gotta farm for them my braindead DPS toon is the one doing it

anyways a lot of these shallow little guys with their silly little lines really grew on me. patting Ulgrim forever. ya got me, old man. ya fukken got me.

i enjoy more substantial writing but it serves the game and that's what i'm judging it based on. and i can get more substantial stuff from lore and various side characters if i seek it out. it's the best way i can think to balance The Loop with The Lore, so to speak

which is part of the reason i think the character writing being more hit and miss doesn't bug me. clearly people can write. the character writing serves specifically to move shit along. it's functional, and extremely repeatable. it facilitates the gameplay loop, which is all it NEEDS to do

several of the pieces regarding cultists of Cthon, the perspective of the Aetherial command on their agents' behavior, and the accounts of imperial leadership watching a conspiracy unfold were in particular effective and enjoyable

speaking of lore notes, i love the lore notes, the lore notes are so so so fun, super effective as exposition tools/setting dev, but also as stand alone horror writing in a huge number of cases. I Love U In-Game Documents I Love U Epistolary Horror I Love U Scaling XP For Discovery

weirdly enough a lore note does describe a transformation more akin to the mythological stories so it's not like nobody on the team knew what they were talking about

however, as far as wendigo stories go, it was effective and did start a series of events that left me kicking myself for being a fucking stooge and going "no! you bastards!" in horror at myself so like. if use of the wendigo isn't something that bugs you this has zero impact

the game. DOES. do one of my cardinal sins of horror media. which is using the wendigo spirit decontextualized from its origins, and as a deer-skull headed humanoid. the second i saw it mentioned under the shaman mastery i cringed real hard and did not stop cringing.

somebody mods in character customization, tho, we're gonna have a problem lmao

not gonna play with mods for this one, i don't think, but i do get curious about the modding scenes of various games and for a moment there i genuinely wanted something that would make me walk faster, but it's not worth it to me to do something i could get with points/equipment

there's a mod that makes the UI more modern and less clunky, and i immensely respect the work that went into it, but literally what the fuck are you doing it being clunky and ugly is so charming

i enjoy literally everything about the game, even the parts that i don't think are very good (most of the voice acting, the dialogue writing) are so immensely charming that they loop around to become good. the setting, the overall aesthetic, the armor and weapon design, it's all very tailored to me

just finished the base and ashes of malmouth with a Nightblade/Soldier and now i'm fiddling around with a few other builds, getting them to the "actually playing the game" stage so i can see which i like best

been playing a shitload of Grim Dawn because i am forever chasing the high of being a babby and playing Diablo 2 for the first time. it's a good game! not good for my increasing lack of sociability, but consider: i love to click on small isometric monsters and make them explode into gibs
