Second report from our work exploring use of polygenic indices in #education - this time from our ethics deep-dive workshop. Thanks to @academicmamma.bsky.social for being a fantastic collaborator and to all participants for rich discussion! Please share widely with genomics and edu networks

Delighted to have chaired this workshop, and for the expertise, insights and enthusiasm of all participants!

We need to be having more of these discussions as the science advances, and - critically - bring in *and listen to* parents, carers and educators.

I agree (as author of the report). The issue is that when translation is discussed in the lit, the proposed purpose and context is a bit hand-wavy, and evidence base on how much extra PGIs β€˜buy’ you given wealth of student data already available is lacking..I only found one study (that we cited)

A Litmus Test for Confounding in Polygenic Scores Polygenic scores (PGSs) are being rapidly adopted for trait prediction in the clinic and beyond. PGSs are often thought of as capturing the direct genetic effect of one's genotype on their phenotype. ...

Think of a polygenic score you care about. Are direct genetic effects driving variation among people in this predictor? Or perhaps other, confounding factors? We at the @arbelharpak.bsky.social & @docedge.bsky.social Labs developed a method to tackle this question. [1/n]
