say it again:

4 million people work in higher ed, the largest employer in 10 states, second largest employer in 10 more, and in 60 of the 100 biggest cities

demolishing higher education is economic sabotage

Before AI skeptics, Luddites raged against the machine...literally The word β€œLuddite” has become shorthand for technophobe, but the original rebels of the Industrial Revolution were actually battling a more insidious foe.

they want to privatize it. they want to stop government and university research for the general interest because it competes with the increasingly bizarre priorities of illiterate billionaires. next generation will do postdocs on how to do sex crimes on the moon and how to put ads in your blood

Can someone "disrupt" Adobe's lock on PDFs? AI popups are terrible, and the SaaS tethering is evil, but their software lacks basic functionality. I was on their forums trying to figure out if you can get rid of all the highlighting on a PDF and the solution was to convert it to a DOC and then back

The extimate core of understanding: absolute metaphors, psychosis and large language models - AI & SOCIETY This paper delves into the striking parallels between the linguistic patterns of Large Language Models (LLMs) and the concepts of psychosis in Lacanian psychoanalysis. Lacanian theory, with its focus on the formal and logical underpinnings of psychosis, provides a compelling lens to juxtapose human cognition and AI mechanisms. LLMs, such as GPT-4, appear to replicate the intricate metaphorical and metonymical frameworks inherent in human language. Although grounded in mathematical logic and probabilistic analysis, the outputs of LLMs echo the nuanced linguistic associations found in metaphor and metonymy, suggesting a mirroring of human linguistic structures. A pivotal point in this discourse is the exploration of β€œabsolute metaphors”—core gaps in reasoning discernible in both AI models and human thought processes and central to the Lacanian conceptualization of psychosis. Despite the traditional divide between AI research and continental philosophy, this analysis embarks on an innovative journey, utilizing Lacanian philosophy to unravel the logic of AI, using concepts established in the continental discourse on logic, rather than the analytical tradition.

this paper goes crazy: chatGPT is psychotic (in lacanian terms) link.springer.com/article/10.1...

big motivation was to get them to read in english bc they won't learn to do that in school for a while. but also we didn't try to force it too much. and even 5 minutes of phonics can lock some basics down

Also sometimes just sitting around with a pen and paper casually, asking about various words and sounds and taking turns writing. It can be a fun conversation instead of a formal lesson. Things can gel quickly

Started at around 4, they have to know the letters first. Can spend as little as 5 min on it in the evening, depending on their interest, and if they really resisted, didn’t push. Lots of modeling as well. bsky.app/profile/did:...

weirdly they don't like comics (donald duck is huge in NL). we have this old-school series of phonics book called Primary Phonics. now the youngest is on to Mo Willems books, which include more sight words. oldest took a while get into YA novels, Dory Fantasmagory cracked it for him
