I'd argue there's little difference between using ML instead of a real person to match datasets (except maybe scale but this incident could have easily been performed by one person with access to the relevant datasets) - The problem is the workflow that happens after this, and likely the data!

Is there anything that suggests they used ML for this task? This stupidity would have been easier to do using "traditional" data manipulation methods.

This data analysis shows how much has been donated it does not shed any light on how much got transferred. It doesn't shed any light on what happened to the money after that. For that we can only go on the limited amount that has been shared publicly.

Here are two charts to backup the numbers. The first shows the amount collected in donations each month, adjusted to dollar exchange rates about 1 month ago. The second shows the number of campaign creations again by month.

I don't feel its fair (or usefully constructive) to frame this as what Bluesky "permits". The article you link above explains the reasons in detail but TLDR - There isn't currently a viable solution that allows both BSKY style federation and block behaviour without sharing the block list..
