It is unfortunately unfair to say that. Christianity is absolutely a salad bar. ("Take what you want, and leave the rest.") It is possible (and has been) to commit what I'd bet we'd both consider to be vile practices and be fully in concord with the Bible - if you pick/ignore that right parts.

By far the most likely interpretation of what Cooper means is a reference the most common religious position in America, "There is a personal source I can go to so death isn't paralyzingly terrifying and I feel like I'm not alone."
