I also think for a lot of Americans the non-American world is implicitly and likely unthinkingly divided into Europe which we split from and brown people who are different from America historically because of race.

Canada doesn’t fit into that mental model of the world.

if you squint, you can see why i think so many things (sports, democracy, art forms, cultures) are “like church”, and by that I mean they are things that *appear* to just be a fact of life, but are in fact made up of incessant waves of people inheriting and perpetuating the culture forward.
