Today I did an alter featuring my favorite villain of the year, Aunt Gladys!

Oh for sure! But it could be a cool way to show growth for characters. And then I could put them in my mono color commander decks :)

Or even the opposite! Imagine if Jace’s next appearance he starts dropping dimir spells, as he continues sliding towards evil! We don’t present the narrative this way in magic but it could be very cool to show these more subtle changes in character philosophy.

It could be an interesting reflection on their character journey! For instance, currently GW Ajani casting a Red White hybrid spell showing how he’s moved past the red but still carries that growth with him would be neat!

Because the average person who isn’t reading a bluesky thread on magic or interacting with Mark Rosewater on tumblr broadly does not care about UB “ruining magic” as long as they can sleeve up their blorbo and stomp their friends. This doesn’t mean that UB dislike is wrong, but its interesting data.

I’m interested to see how this data shifts with set release schedules next year. The Magic community has a tendency to bounce from release to release rapidly to build hype (content creators have to do this as well) and so if Lorwyn comes out, do all the UB sets stay low or does the next one rise up?

You get access to companions in more decks which are a super fun deck building tool, and like 3 other cards that “matter”. This isn’t the beginning of some descent into no CI, it’s a small addendum to a system created a long time ago by people who aren’t the designers of the game.

You are right! All it does it open up creativity in deckbuilding. I want to do Keruga companion for Henzie Toolbox Torrie, which could still happen with rule 0 but like it should just be allowed.

They should 100% be an OR. The decks the Companions would open up to alone makes the change worth it, and all the cards people have said would Break the format are not even top 100 cards in the format currently in decks that can play them. It makes perfect sense to be or, they designed them this way

I understand the fear of all decks trending toward the exact same pile of staples, but looking through the hybrid cards would only open up more deck building creativity not less. I have personally encountered new players who put hybrid cards in decks they couldnt go in, so the people will learn.

Hybrid Mana will not ruin the sanctity of the format.

I get where everyone is coming from on the "Hybrid mana shouldnt change" thing, but I personally would be SO EXCITED to make tons of new Companion decks. Imagine getting to put Keruga in tool box, or doing a mono red deck with Obosh as the companion! If you dont like the change, just dont use it!
