The lesser observer would say this is all optimistic hogwash. What can I say? I'm a romantic. And not a lesser observer.

The novel has that kind of resurrection power. And I believe the public abroad will return to the old well, surrounded by friends, and remember, like the exile finding their way home, that the novel is the American artistic motherland. Our great contribution, our magnificent heirloom."

I think the public is simply caught in a dream of social media and low-calorie snippet storytelling, unaware that they have laid down in a tomb, waiting and waiting and waiting for someone to come by that chamber and say, "Awake, O' Sleeper."

And it may be that they leave it behind for so long that many of them will one day look back, and like wanderers in a desert land, realize they have forgotten the place where that old well resides. But I am not cynical enough to believe that, not yet.
