Seeing guys claim that AI is *already* intelligent and capable of original thought really gives the game away. It’s not about waiting for the technology to miraculously become better, it’s about convincing you it’s something that it’s not

Isn’t it more likely that demand took a hit from the fuel standards enacted by Obama and the advent of hybrids, before any effect from EV sales in the US was felt?

One thing I find curious in some articles about demand destruction, at least in the US, is how they say car sales peaked in 2017 and gas demand started dropping shortly after, and they point to Tesla as the driver for this, but that seems too early for EVs to have an impact?

I regularly see people wondering how it's possible that there are so many musicians and writers and film makers and artists from a tiny nation like Iceland.

And the answer is really simple: State funding for art education and artists. I literally get a salary from the government to write books.

America Just Lost Another of Its Great Institutions. This One Was a Filmmaker. Frederick Wiseman leaves behind a body of work as massive as all the institutions he chronicled.

I wrote about Frederick Wiseman, for whom most superlatives don't go far enough, and the most important thing he did that wasn't making movies.

Southern California air board rejected pollution rules after AI-generated flood of comments SoCal’s pollution authority scrapped a plan to phase out gas-powered appliances after receiving more than 20,000 emails sent by an AI-powered platform called CiviClick.

β€œThese advances in AI really risk degrading the connections between politicians and political bodies and regular people.” Samuel Woolley, a researcher at the University of Pittsburgh, warns of β€œdigital astroturfing” after a SoCal air board scrapped a key plan amid an AI-powered opposition campaign.

The platforms can juice the algorithms to help anyone they think will help them get richer and more powerful. Elon's doing it with X. Mark is almost certainly doing it (more subtly) on Meta platforms. And chatbots can do it with insane results. We need real guardrails on algorithmic manipulation.

Researchers cite governance, farming pressures and the need for stronger land rights.

The U.S. Is Launching a Regulatory Assault on Drone Users New restrictions try to shield ICE from being watched from above.

Although the Trump administration cites national security concerns to justify snatching affordable drones away from American users for their own good, its own actions consistently undermine the argument, argues Faine Greenwood.

Big Oil got the win they've dreamed of: gutting climate pollution regs.

But their reaction isn't joy, IT'S FEAR.

Why? The old system of checks on corporate power is crumbling, and they know we could win a much better system in it's place.

They're right to be scared. We're coming for them.

This is wealth redistribution, which Republicans claim to hate.

They're taking *your* money in the form of taxes, thereby reducing *your* wealth, and giving it to coal companies to prevent them from failing, thereby increasing *their* wealth.
