03.11.2025 02:05 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0The other thing we have to stop.doing as academics is churning out Ph.D.s In 2023 there were 57k Ph.D.s awarded in the U.S., which is sharply up from numbers more like 40k about ten years ago. Are job prospects better? Professors: if you want to do research, do it yourself.

I don't think of people as awful, but it's not hard to find reports of Silicon Valley execs telling a group of eager college students that they must work every waking minute if they want to build a successful company.
20.10.2025 04:45 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0That's the subtext. Also: the messengers here bragging about how much they work are sometimes / often full of shit
17.10.2025 17:53 — 👍 1 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0Stop the madness. Slow the fuck down. Cooperation >> competition. Goes for any endeavor: you don't have to be "better" to reap the benefits, you just have to actually love people and want to help them in collective solidarity, instead of wanting to beat them at some fucking game.

Comments from @barackobama.bsky.social reveal why the Democrats are little better than fascists when it comes to this.

17.10.2025 16:28 — 👍 2 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0The reason is that those three people are supposed to be viciously greedy, wanting all the benefits of whatever they are building for themselves. Unwilling to share with a broader collective. Absolutely focused on crushing the competition, including the people they work with.
17.10.2025 16:28 — 👍 3 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0Why is it that you have to work every waking moment -- 120 hours a week or whatever, like some people brag about -- when three people working 40 hours a week with unity of purpose can produce the same -- and probably better, given their improved physical and mental health -- output?
17.10.2025 16:28 — 👍 5 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0The only reason the idea that constant monomaniacal work is required for greatness has any credibility at all is that we live in a world of absolutely competitive, toxic individualism.
17.10.2025 16:28 — 👍 3 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0This is fascism and ecocide, barely disguised. The idea that great things are only possible if you create unhealthy living conditions for yourself and the planet desperately needs pushback.
17.10.2025 16:28 — 👍 5 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0Let me say a few words about the parade of executives in Silicon Valley and elsewhere claiming that 'you can't do anything great' unless you devote your entire life to working.

higher ed will not survive in its current incarnation as the gatekeeper of class privilege. there simply aren't enough wealthy liberals, and it has long since alienated anyone else who might have risen to its defense
this in itself is not a bad thing

We used to take pride in the fact that unions created the 40-hour workweek, but I guess that's just another way in which 'the left' fails to distinguish itself from fascists nowadays.
