8. You have the right to film law enforcement under the 1st Amendment. If you can’t film, write down details immediately (time, location, officers involved, etc.)

If you witness someone detained, tell them their rights. Don't act as their lawyer - simply make them aware.

7. For immigration-related arrests:

-You have the right to contact your consulate.
-The government MUST provide you with a list of free or low-cost attorneys if requested.
-If you have your own attorney, they MUST let you consult with them.

6. If you are arrested, you have the right to remain silent. Clearly state: “I want to speak with a lawyer.” Then STOP answering questions.

You are entitled to representation, regardless of your citizenship status.

Sign NOTHING unless your lawyer is present.

5. Law enforcement may show up at your home, office, or other personal property. They can not enter without a signed warrant by a judge.

If they don't have a signed warrant by a judge, don't let them in.

4. Law enforcement may set up & stop you at vehicle checkpoints, but they have limited authority.

If asked to search your car, you can calmly state: “I do not consent to a search.”

They may still proceed under certain legal circumstances, but your refusal limits their scope.

3. Law enforcement may stop your vehicle. If they do, you must identify yourself as well as provide registration & insurance documents.

You can refuse a search of your vehicle. Law enforcement can ignore that request if they believe they have legal grounds.

2. If encountering law enforcement, stay calm. You only need to identify yourself. Otherwise, you are free to remain silent. Ask if you are being detained. If the answer is NO, walk away.

If the answer is YES, you must stay until you are free to go.

1. Create an Emergency Contact Plan w/ friends, family members, neighbors & attorney(s) before you leave home. Make sure everyone knows their rights, what to do when they come into contact with law enforcement &who to call if someone is detained by law enforcement.
