Latest bit of Montreal 'bikelash' sidesteps the facts to please bike-lane haters
The findings of a study about bike lanes vs car infrastructure have been twisted by a Montreal publication in a cheap bit of bikelash.

Guelph police launch bike safety campaign for October | CBC News
Guelph police have launched a month-long campaign focused on bicycle safety. Officers will be connecting with cyclists directly to educate them about rules under the Highway Traffic Act. The move has ...
From the @bicyclemayorguelph.bsky.social in CBC on Police enforcing against cyclists in Guelph: "Bidgood worries that the campaign unnecessarily targets cyclists rather than focusing on the root causes of safety issues, and points to the two recent deaths as well."

On September 19, someone's mom was killed in Guelph by the driver of a pickup truck. The driver has now been charged. (Mom was killed but her husband and 3-year-old daughter in a stroller were struck as well!!!)
On August 29, a Guelph cyclist was killed by the driver of a garbage truck. The driver has now been charged.
But today, the @guelphpoliceservice announce a month long campaign of enforcement against people on bikes to ensure they know the rules of the road?
This is a police service demonstrating a failure to adequately respond to road safety issues. It lacks compassion and empathy for the two people (and their families) who were killed by dangerous and careless drivers. The Service should be reviewed and it's priorities dictated to it by Guelph City Council as GPS appear unable/unwilling to address the true dangers on our roadways.
The lack of compassion, understanding, nuance, etc. boils our blood and rocks our faith in the Service to it's core. I doubt we are alone.
Ride safe Guelph Cycling friends, the law is after you.

Yielding right of way to a pedestrian while riding a bike is a much more positive experience because you can see each others' faces.
They smile, you smile, everybody wins.
Contrast that to the nervous glance, wondering whether the invisible driver behind those tinted windows values my existence.

Left: black line illustration of a vandalized camera box with cracked window and graffiti β30kmh 24 hrs DAY.β Right text: cameras work as intended but the Province plans to ban them, promising βa million waysβ later. Bottom caption: βDrivers hate this one weird trick: itβs called βgoing 30 in a 30.ββ
βWhat is ASE?β Underlined definition: Automated Speed Enforcement = speed sensor + camera ticketing only over the posted limit; owner-liability fine; meant to change behaviour; frees police for higher-risk work. Bottom blue block: βWhat itβs NOT: Itβs not a substitute for design. Theyβre our training wheels until we build the safety in.β Simple line drawing of a standing camera unit.
White slide with a yellow pill label reading βASE is a tool.β Text explains that ASE buys time and saves lives while we rebuild streets to make safe speeds the default. Bold subhead: βThe global perspective on ASE is simple,β followed by four points: design the danger out; use cameras where risk is highest; keep the process transparent and fair; turn cameras off once the street itself does the job. Minimal black line drawing of a fallen camera at bottom right.
Blue headline bar: βMultiple experts have made it abundantly clear: Automated Speed Enforcement works.β Body text cites: SickKids + TMU study of 250 school zones (45% reduction in speeding); Dr. Andrew Howardβs quote about speed driving injury risk; Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police support; CAA 2025 survey bullets (speeding common in residential areas; 73% slow near cameras; 52% donβt speed back up; 46% avoid ASE roads). Small βSpeed Limit 30β sign icon in bottom corner.
Drivers hate this one weird trick: matching the big number on the sign to the one on your dash.
Ford wants to ban school-zone cameras + fund βa million waysβ later. Great! Build them now. Donβt switch off the only thing lowering speeds today.

Cycling tourism through the Greenbelt and along the Great Lakes has so much to offer Ontarioβs economy, especially if we coordinate it with agri-food tourism.

My son riding his bike on a gravel rail trail
My 5-year-old was happily biking ahead of us and stopped at a stop sign. We watched from 30 feet behind as an SUV sailed through their stop sign without stopping and without even slowing down or looking up. My son had the right of way. If he had gone - my heart can hardly bear thinking about it.
