I'm guessing we don't have a better resolution image?
Also kind of highlights how silly it is the Finch West line doesn't go all the way to Malton, and that it just stops right before the airport... nor does it go all the way east to Yonge and Sheppard. Not even on the future plans?

Not suspicious at all that the US institution that made this map would quietly ignore a US territorial dispute.

I imagine announcing a public sale means there's been no quiet interest... maybe we can get a deal. π€

There was a walk-through (ahem, "active transportation corridor") between 16 Hadati at the Eastview light that I'd use to cross Victoria and get to Ottawa Crescent.
(Yes kids, this was before there was a traffic light at Cassino.)
This "surplus property" was once public space...

But more importantly: when you do it right, children grow up with biking and busing as normal. They get the freedom to move around from a young age, and won't feel the need to buy a car once they turn seventeen. This is a generational investment that will take twenty years to pay its full dividend.
26.11.2025 23:51 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
Nobody's ready to sell their car. They can't! You have to build alternatives first.
The fact is, only 1000 families need to downsize by a single car, and we'll pay for the entire missing bike network in two years.
It's absolutely insane how much household budget is wasted on unnecessary vehicles.

Someone help me with the math, how many bike paths can we build at $200,000,000 a year?
26.11.2025 23:44 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
And because it's a car town, we're all forced to own a car. Forgive me but I'd rather keep the $10k a year in my own bank account.

Fact is, we need to make the transition work for some people before it can ever work for all. Despite the fact that I've only ever lived on the wrong side of the Hanlon and/or the wrong side of Victoria to ever actually be an early adopter.

A self fulfilling prophecy. We don't make it possible for anyone to sell their car, so nobody gets to realize the gains from bike investments. Then since all those drivers already have a car, there's no incentive to start biking.
(Those who can't drive or can't afford to are pointedly ignored.)

Thank you for advocating.
It is an interesting choice to hold the budget meeting when most working people are at work, but I suppose that helps them pretend there are fewer people interested. Sadly, I fear my own methods of engagement (i.e. shitposting on GuelphToday) are an inadequate substitute.

Guelph just opened a new bike bridge!
This is an important first step in extending our accessible to all ages and abilities (AAAA) bike system to the eastern half of the city.
Next up: 3 km of improvements along Emma, Stevenson and Cassino to connect all the way to the east end trail system.

FYI: the afternoon train arrives in Guelph at 18:18 -- three full minutes after all the buses leave. You can wait 30 minutes and catch the last bus of the day, but parkades are still free on Sundays.
And you'll have to cab downtown. GO leaves at 8:07 and the first bus gets downtown for 10:15.

The GO was on time, comfortable, and at $20/family, far better value than driving. Plus we got to meet some other friendly families on the train!
Looking forward to even more trips per weekend, and to the day we can rely on Guelph Transit instead of driving downtown.

correction: it's four lanes from Victoria to Woolwich now. No room at all for bikes trying to climb the hill.

The east side on the big hill, between Inverness and the river. It's back to four lanes now, I think? No center turn lane and the traffic still funnels down to one lane in each direction east of Inverness.

I'm sad to hear this. When the USA approved vaccines for under-fives months before Canada did, we got shots in New York State. Boosters too. Free of charge. Honestly not overly fond of a lot of Americans right now, but diseases don't respect national borders.

In the eyes of a child, a bike is freedom. But not when you're limited to a tiny corner of one small city because of the impassable oceans of cars and their dangerous drivers.

β’ Even hills are a barrier when you're five. Guelph is a city of hills but also a city of valleys. If we fill in the missing bike routes along rivers & rails (including the buried rivers) we'd span the whole city in accessible trails. Going around a hill is much easier than going over.
15.08.2025 15:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
β’ Narrow single-file tracks? No good for trailers or training wheels. Even some of Guelph's signed official bike routes abruptly turn into narrow tracks in places.
β’ Getting to other cities is right out. Cambridge is a forty minute ride away but we'll never ride there together.
15.08.2025 15:25 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
β’ Green-signed "bike routes"? All of the above, but worse. You don't even have a dedicated space in theory, let alone in practice.
β’ Sidewalks? Ride confident in the knowledge that if a driver doesn't look before entering their driveway, it's your fault.

This summer has been eye-opening, riding with my five year old. Confident adult riders may not notice that so much of our city is inaccessible to most bike riders.
β’ Painted bike lanes? No good for small riders. Invisible from the modern pickup. Always blocked by cars making "quick stops."
