It’s not about being liked or sales or reviews that determine your worth as a writer. It’s knowing the absolute chaos going on in the world and still sitting down at that keyboard and writing your stories. It’s perseverance through these hellish times and a belief that your stories heal yourself.

This country is backsliding into darkness but damn if I’m not going to disassociate tonight with homemade ginger cookies and Star Trek.

This week my Comp 1 class studied “Theme for English B” by Langston Hughes. The students liked it but it took a few read-throughs to get there.

Hard week. Processing it all. Everything we are as a people. Culture wars, bloodshed, our dashed ideals. Began writing a poem yesterday. Words flowed. Sometimes writing when we’re scared or angry helps us heal or at least makes us realize how to gauge our feelings. #5amwritersclub

What mad science is this?

Today’s classroom annotation exercise was “Casey at the Bat” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, a jaunty baseball poem about hubris and dashed expectations.

Taught annotation exercise using Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” in class today and the students loved it. There’s something about a well-structured poem that feels comforting, like a big bowl of mashed potatoes made by a rural New Englander who wrote about woods and fences.

Write the weird stories, the stories you find fascinating, the stories that matter to you. This industry will cut you down. Readers are fickle. Reviews will be few and far between. So you might as well enjoy what you create and ride that sucker solo. #5amwritersclub
