Honoured to see our work recognized in this way. The project started in my first year of graduate school, so Iβm glad to see the many, many hours we put in were worth it.

With the Canadian election looming, are you wondering about how provincial politics might affect the federal outcome? Our pre-print shows where you should expect to see provincial politics bleed over the most (spoiler alert - the answer is Quebec!)
23.04.2025 15:26 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We're open to any feedback or thoughts. This project was motivated by a lot of things, but first and foremost among them was the disaster that was the BC United in the 2024 BC provincial election.
17.04.2025 21:36 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0To preview our findings, we show:
(1) Provincial PID is correlated with federal PID, but distinct.
(2) Congruent PIDs lead to stronger partisan attachments
(3) In provinces with distinct party systems like QC, provincial PID helps structure federal vote choice.
In this preprint, we investigate how subnational PID interacts with our usual measure of PID. You can read the whole paper on osf here.

Ever wondered how voters handle partisan identity at levels besides the national government?
If people never really expected the money, then it wonβt be missed (it was just an occasional windfall). If they got used to an extra payment, then itβll be politically noticeable.
15.03.2025 02:09 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I was just thinking about this. I wonder how much Canadians took into account the rebate in budgeting and salary expectations. I suppose thatβs hard to figure, but it seems important for how much theyβll miss the money.
15.03.2025 02:09 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Did I promise myself not to take on any new projects? Yes.
Did I take on a new project because I promised myself it was a teenie tiny little itty bitty project? Also yes.
Is it going to end up being a teenie tiny little itty bitty project? I plead the fifth.
I've been an unwaivering NYT and WaPo subscriber since moving to the US. I have always been happy to support them despite many editorials and op-eds I disagree with, for the good journalism. I have no problem with balanced editorial rooms.
26.02.2025 16:34 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Other than the NYT, what is a good paper I can subscribe to to financially support good journalism? Ideally with minimal editorial content.
26.02.2025 16:32 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I happily subscribed to the WaPo for their news coverage and stayed subscribed through many editorials I disagreed with because I believe in paying for journalism.
But an editorial page with an official point of view is not something I need to fund. Iβll take my subscription dollars elsewhere.

13.02.2025 20:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We're incredibly grateful for the time and input of the election officials we worked with and believe this paper offers a model for future work. All our results are our own and don't reflect the views of any of the election officials we worked with.
13.02.2025 20:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Excited to see more of our work on election trust in print, providing election officials with clear scientific evidence for ways they can build trust in elections. You can read it open access here:

13.02.2025 20:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We consulted election officials in Texas, Colorado, Georgia, and LA to test messages they have used to build trust in elections. We find in every case the messages are effective, regardless of the party of the recipient.

Musk tweet boasting of "feeding USAID into the chipper"
βI went over it with him in detail, and he agreed that we should shut it down,β Musk said. βAnd I actually checked with him a few times [and] said βare you sure?ββ The answer was yes, he said. βAnd so weβre shutting it down,β Musk said. USAID staffers were told that the agencyβs headquarters in Washington will be closed Monday amid the turmoil. In an email to staff early Monday, the agencyβs leadership said: βAgency personnel normally assigned to work at USAID headquarters will work remotely β¦ with the exception of personnel with essential on-site and building maintenance functions individually contacted by senior leadership.β
The executive branch does not have the legal right to cancel appropriated spending or eliminate agencies created by Congress.
Trump and Musk are doing both. Entirely lawless and unconstitutional.
The world's largest provider of food assistance shut down.
