And if we look at the average ratings & rankings of quarterfinalists this season compared to previous years, the rating is slightly lower/ranking slightly higher than the previous ~15 years, but if we include the decade before that, this is not an outlier season at all.

It's fairly common for a Top 4 team like SJU or Linfield to miss the quarterfinals. It's happened 26 times in the last 27 tournaments, and the distribution between teams ranked between #2 and #10 this season was the tightest its ever been.

It felt like last weekend was a little crazier than a normal #d3fb Round of 16, so I decided to check some historical comps using my ratings.
First, the breakdown of teams who made the quarterfinals according to their ranking before the Round of 16 games:

A two-point advantage works out to about a 55% win expectancy, and 3 points is about 58%. That's pretty close to a coin flip, but I think it would also be fair to say that there's a clear favorite in those two games, especially when each of the 6 predictive models has the same team favored.
