Text: โ€œFew would dispute that the "healthiest" of contemporary men are afflicted with a malaise - an illusive, unlocalized illness whose symptoms - floating anxieties, pains and "sick sensations" which have no medically discernible cause, unaccountable small depres-sions, etc. - are multiple and disparate, yet vague and ambiguous; a virus, one might venture to describe it, of the soul and of the spirit.
There are countless reasons for the condition and no teams of psychologists and social scientists, devoting their full energies to the problem and laboring night and day, could define all of them in a hurry. It is, however, abundantly clear that a principal cause of the malaise lies in the ever-widening psychic as well as physical separation of man and nature and the increasing artificiality of his environment - the synthetic materials in the structures which surround him, the mass-produced, inorganic foods which he consumes, the chemicals he devours in order to go to sleep, wake up, tune in or tune out, the filth and poisons in the air, the persistent hum of electric motors.
The culprit is, of course, the city.
If population projections point to the very real possibility that before a century has passed America will no longer have a countryside, but will consist of a single city, a megalopolis three thousand miles long, well, many of the hideous emotional and physical, not to mention social consequences of such an existence are already upon us. Living within a sunless and airless and continually expanding complex of high-rising concrete, steel, plastic and glass, one can only temporarily escape, and then only to an interminable nightmare of ranch houses, highways, gas stations, car lots and industrial sludge lying beyond each apparent exit. This constitutes only a difference in degree rather than kind. โ€œ text continues on next image

Text continued: โ€œIf, indeed, there is still a countryside to enjoy, and if one may count on two of every fifty-two weeks to take advantage of it, the conditionings of peculiarly urban exigencies make it immensely difficult for many city people to open themselves to the country. The country has become alien to them. The city has become their "natural" habitat. Still, the malaise gives demonstration that their adaptation to the city is not (cannot be) complete.
Audio Fidelity has no solution to the crisis. But with this extraordinary album we are prepared to offer both a few moments of respite and a reminder of what natural sounds sound like, to anyone still capable of responding.
Technology is a major cause of the contemporary predicament, but is also capable of producing ways of lightening the load. With this set one can, literally and for whatever period of time one chooses, shut out the murderously unnatural environment of the city and create one's own, a calm, soothing ambience which only nature can provide, an.environment inside of which to talk, make love, eat, sleep, study, think... the uses are infinite.
This is, to be sure, an unusual album, but it is by no means a
"novelty" item. There is nothing voguish or ephemeral about it. It is an album with both a high purpose and a genuine esthetic and it will likely be returned to with great frequency as sources of relaxation and renewal.
Ambience 2 presents thirty minutes of a crackling fire in the hearth of a large 19th century beach house in Cape May, New Jersey and another thirty minutes, abridged from some dozen hours of tape, of a day in the country, (Woodstock, New York to be precise) beginning with the insect and bird sounds of the morning and ending with the subtly and fascinatingly different sounds of the evening.โ€ End of text

The cover on this seemingly innocent fireplace & nature soundscape album called Ambience Two (1970) does not prepare you for the intensity of the existential despair on the back cover. ๐Ÿ˜ณ
