Reminds me of the time I put myself up for the β€œinterdisciplinary scholar rep” position in one of my professional orgs with a β€œinterdisciplinary work is a labor issue” candidate statement and the deanlet running the committee refused to add me to the ballot. They are aware!

If the name Project Blue isn't familiar, @azluminaria.org has been doing great reporting on the dangers of the azluminaria.org/2025/07/21/t... and the local organizing to resist it, including here:

Not an essay, but a string of episodes (6-9) in the current season of the American Vandal podcast includes interviews with higher ed scholars like Tressie MC, and a throughline about how tech companies' targetted HBCUs first to get AI into unis. Feels at least adjacent to what you're thinking?

The (Ed) Tech Industry has made citizens believe that the problem with education is reading, thinking, and writing when the problem with education is austerity.

Reading, thinking, and writing are not the problems to be solved. Austerity is.

Two books sitting on a wooden table: Keleka Putuma's Collective Amnesia, whose cover shows a person in an elaborate face covering and a dark dress holding an infant in a light-colored dress, and Bianca Stone's What is Otherwise Infinite with a green overlay on an originally sepia-toned painting of a demon leaning across two rocks with the sea in the background.

Read @biancatherosestone.bsky.social's What Is Otherwise Infinite in the same week as Koleka Putuma's Collective Amnesia and it was the perfect accidental pairing--excellent on their own, and better together.

Canvas just became one of the most powerful surveillance, IP theft, & data monetization tools in the world.

OpenAI bought a user-base locked in to long-term contracts.

But they can’t make us use their trashware.

Boycott. Luddify. Open source.

Don’t let them have your work or your students.

Amazon Ring Cashes in on Techno-Authoritarianism and Mass Surveillance Ring founder Jamie Siminoff is back at the helm of the surveillance doorbell company, and with him is the surveillance-first-privacy-last approach that made Ring one of the most maligned tech devices....

My response to Ring's decision to roll back reforms and go back to surveillance on behalf of police as a business model.

This is part of a trend of companies bending over backwards to get in on the techno-authoritarian money/power grab that comes with being a lapdog of the carceral state.

If you’re still using Ring, the good news is that you can get rid of it, and then you won’t be enabling all this anymore!

there is no reason to assume that whatever's happening in those courts are legal; certainly everyone involved is acting like they're ashamed of getting exposed or prosecuted

The Supreme Court should preserve the status quo until legal questions are resolved and explain the disposition of cases for the public. They are abdicating basic principles of equity and failing to fulfill their institutional role. They aren’t pretending to try. There isn’t even the veneer of law.

It's about harming Black people & replacing union jobs with Amazon/FedEx.
The wages of whiteness.
"Black people make up a disproportionate share of postal workers. [Their] activism changed the Post Office and its unions."

Funny that this is @ivws.bsky.social's most recent post: just left first panel of #VWoolf2025 early bc, in a quite large lecture hall, the moderator announces "we don't need microphones, right?"

So much for accessibility, I guess.

Xo, a former grad student who received a review that the editor acknowledged was obnoxious, but chose to send in full regardless!

Unlike reviewers, editors know when they’re sending a review like this to a grad student, and have options about how much to share with the author. If you receive a cruel review, as an editor, there are a number of places you can go from there!

University gen AI training is presented as addressing a deficit in us. Staff and students need to be taught how to use it ethically and responsibly. But the problem is with the technology itself. It’s inherently unethical and irresponsible: extractive, imperialistic, delusional, and unsustainable.
