Sir, do you think the pardon alone helped you to keep going? Or was there something else that drove you to continue as a statesman rather than live out your days as a recluse? The answers to those questions might help explain why Shoeless Joe never stopped loving and teaching the game.

Been reading a lot about Joshua Liao who pursued Taiwan independence after the Feb. 28 Incident. A good introduction is found at taiwaninsight.org/2021/04/12/j...

Years ago, I heard a lecture from West Point historian on Euro. military revolution, and idea that a.b.s could withstand latest advances in artillery compared to traditional fortresses. I have seen both in Italy. He said a.b.'s didn't always hold up but gave no specific historical examples.

Ok, I wondered abt that. I didn't see a specific name mentioned. I was more fascinated with the model/pictures to actually care.

If model is to scale, I'm not used to seeing bastions that huge compared to smaller forts in US (e.g., Ft. Mantanzas, Fort McHenry). I know little of this battle. If artillery maintained direct fire with little defensive fire/counter battery, looks like concentration of force at decisive point.

Busted their way through an angled bastion no less

Reading U.S. docs JFK to Reagan regarding One China vs Two Chinas, Taiwan independence, etc. Policymakers consistently opposed either. My favorite quote comes from Nixon in 1972 convo with Kissinger/Haldeman: "That’s so goddamn—have you ever heard of the Taiwan Independence Movement?"

Here in Kaohsiung, visited Air Force Museum. Saw different MiG fighters and IL bomber that defected to Taiwan from the PRC. Saw F104‘s, F-5s and F 100s I watched flying over Taiwan back in the mid 80s. Also saw a couple of interesting flight simulators and massive UHF radios. Lotta things to see.

50 years ago, when the fall of Saigon was imminent, an iconic photo was taken of people clamoring to get on a helicopter on top of the Pittman Apts or old CIA building. Today, the building/shack remain, surrounded by modern buildings.

It truly is. I had a glass last night. So smooth. Bought bottle in Taichung. Many flavors depending on how distilled. Too bad I can’t get in US.

I had a neighbor who sold his house and left FL in Feb for MO because he was tired of the politics and hurricanes. Every time I hear of severe WX out there I wonder how he and his wife are faring.

I just kinda wrote this thing on the KMT's insane take on freedom of speech in #Taiwan for fun with no editing process, but I hope you like it

I can believe that. Hard on the air frames and pilots/AMTs. If WX guys are suffering, COMMs, etc. are wore out too. There's no depth to give people a break. No such thing as R&R other than going home and blowing steam.

Is it any different for air force? I haven't had any conversations with those kind of folks in awhile. In 40 years, though, I never sensed they were held to same standard/criticized like the army in Taiwan society esp bec of the power of the MPs before 1987.

If the 中華民國海軍軍官學校 has the same culture, ok, I buy it. In the last couple years, I have been told that 04-06 US equivalents were suffering mental breakdowns and/or retiring. Efforts to discipline subordinates were overruled at the top. Too much work/burden placed on the mid-career officers

My parents worked in factories from the 1960s-1990s. The one thing they wanted more than anything was for me to get a non-factory job that didn't require 8 or more hour shifts or working 7-3, 11-7, and 3-11 with 2 days off between each, making slightly better than minimum wage.

Fear is definitely real. US students considering grad school in Europe since Gov jobs/internships dried up. even faculty with visas afraid to go abroad
