Today is a sad day for America, for those of us who believe in justice, and for those of us who believe that America’s diversity is the bedrock for a thriving democracy.
PowerSwitch Action repudiates the cowardly decision by the Supreme Court to allow Trump’s blatantly unconstitutional executive order ending birthright citizenship to stand in many places across the country. Shame on the Court for yet again enabling the Trump regime’s autocratic push.
Trump’s executive order is a white supremacist policy intended to call into question the Americanness of Black and Brown citizens and our right to belong. It’s part of a desire to undo the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. These are foundational principles of freedom forged through the crucible of war to end the crime of slavery. They are not up for debate.
This order is part of the Trump regime’s attempt to reinstate a white supremacist notion of America. In LA and across the nation, Trump is sending masked agents backed by soldiers to tear people away from their families. The Court’s choices — to limit judges’ ability to intervene on behalf of everyone in our country, and to not shut down this unconstitutional order — are yet more attacks terrorizing immigrant families and assaulting freedom for all of us.
Our communities know what is right, and we know this is wrong. That’s why people all around the country are taking daily actions to protect and support our immigrant families and neighbors.
Today’s rulings make even more clear that we must organize at a speed and scale greater than in most of our lifetimes. Courts are an important tool, but they will not be what stops authoritarianism. Our communities will.
We won’t abandon our siblings living in states that are, so far, allowing this order to go unchallenged, and we will not abandon each other anywhere — illegal executive orders, inadequate courts, and a Congress that is too busy cutting taxes for billionaires be damned.
Today is a sad day for America, for those of us who believe in justice, and for those of us who believe that America’s diversity is the bedrock for a thriving democracy.

LA is home to nearly a million undocumented immigrants. If you live here, you know someone living that reality whether you know it or not.
It’s part of what makes this city what it is—and no, we’re not living in fear because of them.

NJ mayor arrested while protesting opening of ICE detention center
The mayor of Newark was arrested Friday at an ICE detention facility in New Jersey where congressional leaders had scheduled an afternoon “oversight” visit.
This is outrageous. ICE just arrested Mayor Ras Baraka of Newark, NJ outside a private prison corporation’s $1 billion detention facility that the City says is violating local laws. The Mayor was with Congress members investigating the facility.

As Uber Executives Celebrate Profits, Uber Drivers and Advocates Criticize the Corporation for Inaction in Wake of Deportation of UberEats Driver Ricardo Prada Vásquez
“While Uber holds its annual shareholder meeting and CEO Dara Khosrowshahi regales shareholders with speeches and slideshows touting the growth and profitability of the corporation over the last year, Uber drivers are speaking out in solidarity with an immigrant driver recently abducted by the Trump administration.”
“Despite actively recruiting and relying on a majority immigrant workforce to make its billions, Uber has failed to even acknowledge the detention and deportation to El Salvador of UberEats driver Ricardo Prada Vásquez while he was driving for Uber in March. Instead, the company has remained silent, failing to take any public steps to protect drivers from abduction and deportation.”
“Khosrowshahi has proudly shared his own immigrant story and criticized Trump’s cruel immigration policies during his first term as president, but this go-around it’s clear that Uber’s CEO has made a different calculation. By refusing to stand up for and protect the immigrant drivers who make it profitable, Uber is showing us that literally nothing is more important to them than enriching executives and shareholders — no matter whose lives are destroyed.”
The following joint statement the day of Uber’s shareholder meeting was released by:

🚨 Today, as Uber execs celebrate profits, drivers and advocates from across the US and around the world are joining together to release this statement criticizing the corporation for its inaction in the wake of the deportation of UberEats driver Ricardo Prada Vásquez:

Blue and orange graphic with Action News headline that reads: "Uber Uber Eats driver reportedly deported to El Salvador after making wrong turn. After crossing the border, Vasquez was taken into custody by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol authorities and deported to El Salvador. Reports show he had permission to enter the country through the CBP One app and was waiting for an appointment with immigration. Because he left the country, officials said his status was invalid." Text below the article reads: "Uber depends on immigrant drivers. It needs to stand up against abductions."
Uber relies on a majority immigrant workforce to make its billions – drivers like Ricardo Prada who was detained and deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration without due process. It’s time for Uber to speak out against this injustice and protect drivers from abduction and deportation.

Amazon may not have the best customer service or the lowest prices, but it’s really good at avoiding taxes by funneling profits into overseas tax havens like Luxembourg – something mom-and-pop stores can’t afford to do.
