The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler is my favorite novel of all time and literally changed my life. I love it. I read it once almost every year.

I don't know if the novels would have "worked" for me without the mental images of the characters, the SDF-1, the Veritechs, etc., but you're absolutely right: the novels take a good story and make it great.
