I used to work on the McLaren Automotive account. That's pretty much as luxury as it gets. You know, glossy brochures for cars worth the price of a really nice house. I snapped when they moved that to MTPE.
I know I should try to get direct clients. Not easy.

They've honed their craft over time. How will the young translators hitting the market today develop those skills?

We will definitely lose these skills. An experienced translator today can "post-edit" machine translation and make it better because they've done the hard work (hours upon hours of it) of translating from scratch, made their own mistakes, and been corrected by more experienced translators.

Ha! I've been called a "resource" too. Very pleasant.

You begin wondering if it would be a good idea to waterproof your phone in order to take it into the shower with you. At night, you turn up the volume all the way in order to hear the notifications in your sleep.
All very sane and healthy behaviours.

You're in direct competition with other translators, and whoever clicks first gets the job. Totally opaque process. Notifications fall at any time of day or night. You never leave your phone for fear of missing an important job. You can't take a shower without wondering what you'll miss out on.

You could also ask to split the job. You could ask questions. You had an exchange with a human being with whom you would develop a relationship over time. Then, one day, they introduced the LCX platform. And now you get a notification on your phone for available jobs. First come, first served.

Even before AI kikked my job, us translators were uberized by the LSPs. I used to work (almost exclusively) for LionBridge. Until a few years ago, you'd get an email from a project manager asking you if you could take a job with a certain wordcount and deadline. You could negotiate the deadline. ⬇️
