So limited, non-universal UBI increases entrepreneurship for women and black people, but *white men specifically* need universality to encourage entrepreneurship?

cool

Iirc the sam altman study did not improve education for american *men*, and did not improve entrepreneurship for non-black american men. And this is surprising because it’s the reverse of what we see with studies in developing countries, or for minorities inside developed countries.

Has anyone put together a comprehensive list of all the things that american men are statistically failing at right now? Like there's the loneliness epidemic, the undereducation thing, the employment gap, the incel problem, even UBI doesn't really improve education or entrepreneurship.....

i have been developing a theory of things lately and it's called "big number scary"

not saying it has to be a trend or new, just new to my personal thinking: every time i see a big number now, without contextualizing it, i wonder if someone is trying to use big number scary on me

nix definitely does not get hype for being pretty or ergonomic or consistent or easy to learn or easy to debug or ...

it gets hype for doing stuff

2nd one seems dubious - while hours worked has been creeping upwards it hasn't changed nearly enough in last few decades to explain any changes IMO

anyway i was about to write something like, β€œyou cannot live in a free society and also forbid people from living where they would like to live” but it occurs to me that many, many americans do not want to live in a free society

Age verification bs is getting common and dumb enough that it should probably just be a browser standard.

Just require them to send an obligatory X-Is-Underage header in every GET request.

We present a simplified, p5.js version of the vocal tract synthesizer from Neil Thapen's popular Pink Trombone, adapted for use in a creative coding assignment concerned with interaction design and absurd puppeteering.

I guess it's technically an impeachable offense, but the legislative branch has no self-respect and so he gets away with it?

Here's what a Sam Altman-backed basic income experiment found The results of one of the largest and most comprehensive experiments in basic income are now out.

Found it!
β€œResearchers expected that participants would ultimately earn higher wages by taking on better-paid work, but that scenario didn’t pan out…. "But we don't find any effects on the quality of employment whatsoever."”

Duolingo’s usefulness in free tier is entirely dependent on which side of the A/B test you fall in. The battery system they’re rolling out caps your daily progress unless you pay up.

Other than that, it’s pretty good for starting! You just have to aggressively skip levels whenever theyre too easy

The Politics of Humiliation The politics of humiliation has moved to the center of the reactionary project under Trump II.

"Political philosophy often starts by imagining people at their very bestβ€”at their most rational, most cooperative, most long-sightedβ€”and works backwards from there. I want to ask what emerges when we start with people at our very worst." www.liberalcurrents.com/the-politi/
