Is UNHCR's chief Filippo Grandi advocating for a better global protection system for refugees - or is he advocating for more money to the agency? Further proof, if any were needed, of the clash between UNHCR protection and assistance mandates

While the world is burning and Gaza is starving, the UK government is intent on demonizing an underclass of workers whose exploitation is created by the government's own migration and asylum policies.

How the UK’s immigration system splits families apart – by design
Barriers to migrants’ family life are embedded in the UK’s immigration system.
"That the Home Office sent a removal letter to an eleven-year-old is not a clerical error. It is the system working as designed." @nandosigona.bsky.social on the UK migration system intentionally splitting families apart

Very concerning.
I have an idea.
Two, in fact.
Give asylum seekers the right to work.
And increase the restrictions to betting shops. (Or close them down, ideally.)

The global asylum system is falling apart
What should replace it?
The global asylum system is falling apart, says @economist.com. Indeed. What should replace it? More of the same? A new system cannot be imagined without a proper analysis of the colonial roots of this one - and efforts to dismantle them.

Deployment of National Guard to Los Angeles in Response to ICE Raids Is Dangerous
President Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles in response to protests against recent ICE raids is deeply alarming.
The ICE raids are rooted in discrimination & racial profiling. People have the right to protest. President Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to LA is not about protecting communities, it is about crushing dissent and instilling fear.

I'll say it over and over again; you can't build the mass deportation machine without first building the police state machine.

President Trump’s new travel ban is discriminatory, racist, and downright cruel. By targeting people based on their nationality, this ban only spreads disinformation and hate.

Our latest on the seasonal worker visa.
What jumped out at me when reading this government-commissioned report is that farm-owners will quite openly say that they prefer migrant workers to accrue huge levels of debt, because this pushes them to work harder so that they can pay it off.

EU commission defends declaring Tunisia as 'safe'
The European Commission continues to defend Tunisia as 'safe' for prospective Tunisians wanting international protection in Europe.
While @ec.europa.eu defends declaring Tunisia a safe country to return Tunisians to, @amnesty.org’s @oliviasundberg.bsky.social warns that the assessment “absolutely downplays the human rights backsliding that we've seen in the last few years”.
