Oxygen fills his tiny lungs, the first bleat turning to an outcry. His protest at being forced into the world too soon. She takes in the wonder of his pink face, his flailing fist and feet. A fighter, the midwife calls him. He can be no other. He’s her son. Her blood.

I let Bornot score a strike to the chest and suck up the
pain. In the moment it takes his fist to return to a guarding position, my hands move like lightning to land a jab and a cross. #Blood spurts from his nose as he falls.

I give the lieutenant a smug look.
“Next.”

The girl was tired of covering her ears. She #wound her special toy, twisting the shiny metal handle. When she let go, it teetered from leg to leg, walking forward, never back.

She followed it straight into another world.
