I have no solutions and I have no
proof but my experience as a reader and editor, but it’s concerning that major publishers (that don’t even hire anybody without years of unpaid internships anymore) are allowing such failures. How hard is it to read the damn book?

What on EARTH is happening in publishing? Best case scenario, people are crunched for time in the industry or some individual editors/marketers aren’t doing their jobs. Worst case scenario, publishers are relying on AI for edits and/or deprioritizing queer/BIPOC authors.

It could be confirmation bias, but this many mistakes in this many books by queer/BIPOC authors suggests that publishers want to sell to queer/BIPOC audiences without doing the work. I’ve joked that editors are running manuscripts through Grammarly/ChatGPT, but I’m now truly concerned.

The marketing mistakes I’m seeing are clear evidence of NOT READING the book. It’s marketing something with a supernatural element as horror, marketing books inspired by others as retellings, misleading covers. And authors go completely unseen unless they work tirelessly to market themselves.

Based on my experience as an editor, I can tell you the majority of the errors I’m seeing in published books are ctrl+f mishaps, incomplete tense changes, and spelling errors that wouldn’t be caught by word processors. This leads me to believe it’s a publishing problem, not an author problem.

Of books I’ve read this year:

2️⃣ used incorrect information in marketing
3️⃣ were marketed as a completely different genre, leading to poor reception
5️⃣ were littered with copy errors
6️⃣ non-indie publishers put the burden of marketing their book on the author

ALL were by queer/BIPOC authors.

I freelance edit manuscripts and work in marketing, but I’m not IN publishing, as it were. I know what an editor/marketing team’s job is, however.

I’ve been seeing some harmful trends in published books recently. Primarily in books by queer and BIPOC authors… Thread incoming.
