At the Edge of Life and Death in Ukraine A new photo book by Eddy van Wessel, with nearly two hundred images taken over the course of three years, offers a visual history of the war’s devastation.

In Eddy van Wessel’s photographs of Ukraine after Russia’s invasion, he develops an intimacy with the country and its people that, on the page, is both painful and revealing.

SΓ©amas O'Reilly: I discovered my own memoir had been used to train Meta AI I hate that writers and artists must suffer the indignity of being pickpocketed by the richest men who’ve ever lived.

Having my book stolen by Meta to train their large language models doesn't feel great. But it does present me with another opportunity to declare how much, and how vehemently, I hate everything that Big AI's snake-oil peddling hypemen stand for.

Fair by Jen Calleja review – on the magic of translation A highly original book from the author of Goblinhood explores the art and work of translating fiction

Hurray for Jen Calleja.

Translators do so much to support literature. Not just the act of translation but in terms of talent scouting, pitching books, promoting writers (all unpaid). An essential part of literature as a cultural force, not just an "industry."

β€œThe River House Broke. We Rushed in the River.” The July 4 Texas flooding ripped our Kerr County home from its pillars, pulling us into the water and into the night. Then morning came.

This week, @texasmonthly.bsky.social’s reporting on the floods in Kerr County has been so purposeful and so deeply empathetic. It was personal. This first person account is so, so horrific and so beautifully written.

You’ll cry very hard.

Of course, being multilingual does not make one a translator. Writing well in English is no doubt important, but I’ve seen folks prioritize that over source language command and the results are sad and often caricature-like, especially when it comes to translating any cultural elements/nuances
