An acquaintance (who has never had a cat) brought us these beautiful lilies.

Don’t worry. We admired them in a pet free area, no Millies were harmed in the enjoyment of these flowers.

My Mom and I were reminiscing about this one time I made mushroom lasagna for a Christmas Eve potluck, and someone else brought a different lasagna, and it was the greatest thing ever. So I made two lasagnas. It was amazing.

Guest Chef Pisco kept insisting that the pies might need tasting, so we put them in a safe spot on top of the tv console. TV shows Mulder and Scully of the X-files having a conversation in a messy office. Between the pies is a red meditating Buddha. My mom makes delicious pies. My dad and I used to watch the X-files marathon while preparing the feast, so I put it on after the scary movies are over.

A frumpy, middle-aged white woman holds a very large mushroom up to her eye. It’s bigger than her glasses, which are already oversized. A note about GBC, since it’s such a polarizing dish. I did not grow up eating this and did not like it the few times I had it. But my boyfriend did grow up with it, and it reminds him of his mom, so I was asked if I could make it. The recipe I work from is Alton Brown’s Best Ever Green Bean Casserole. Some modifications: veggie broth instead of chicken, double garlic, extra seasonings. More mushrooms to use up the package. I do not fry my own onions. I did it once, and while it was pretty tasty, it was a lot of work that I did not enjoy doing. More importantly, we realized that the onions were a key part of evoking the memory, and mine just didn’t do that. So I use two cans of store bought fried shoestring onions. Mix half of one package into the beans, spread the rest on top. I use a bigger dish to maximize the crispy onion surface.

Holidays are pretty low key at my house. There are few solid traditions, but I almost always start this particular day off by watching The Witch while making green bean casserole from scratch.
