Oh, bytw, the team of editors that founded the "Animania" later left the magazine in unison (business shenanigans and a lot of bad blood, to put it simple) and founded the "Mangazone" that was renamed to "MangaSzene" shortly after. It only lasted 3-4 years, but was by far the best of the bunch.

Just found out that the page funime.de, which is run by tho former main editor (Ron Carow) has a collection of all the covers.

And just for the sake of it, here's some low-res covers of the fanzine "FUNime", which I've mentioned before. They managed to get to a semi-professional level and had a circulation of several 100 copies, which is huge for a fanzine.

Correct me, if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that one of the founders of "A.M.I." later became something of a official spokeseperson/PR-guy from CLAMP in the german speaking market (which encompasses also Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and parts of Italy and Belgium).

By now almost completely forgotten is the german anime-magazine "A.M.I." (Anime Manga Information), which only run for 2-3 as far as I remember. It started out as a mere fanzine, but quickly turned into a professional magazine. Issues are kinda hard to come by, I still haven't seen one in the wild.

I still have most of the issues from back then. Also, the double-cover was made several times. The fanservice-cover was to boost sales, the tamer one was to not upset the public too much. Sellers could choose which one to display.

I'll see what I can do. The biggest amd most professional german fanzine called "FUNime" is already available in digital form, so I'll probably just scan the other magazines. I wonder if there is some central page which gives access to different zines, searchibg webarchive is tedious...

Also: I wonder if there is some research of at least collecting being done on otaku-fanzines, which existed a plenty in especially in the 90s. I still have some lying around, I guess I should scan them and put them online at some time.

Aaah, the times of anime-magazines. I grew up in the countrysidiest countryside of all countrysides, without internet. Getting my hands on anime-magazines (in my case german one's) felt like obtaining some rare contraband. I can remember just how much i looked forward to a new issue's release date.

Und falls sich wer wundert: Nein, ich bin weder Hayek-Fan noch übersetze ich seine Bücher aus dem Japanischen. Der Text, an dem ich arbeite, behandelt u.a. aber auch Hayek, insofern muss ich mich mit dem alten neoliberalen Pinochet-Fan auseinandersetzen.

Übersetzen ist viel, viel mehr als nur das Übertragen von einer Sprache in die andere.
Die vielleicht wichtigste Fähigkeit, die man braucht, ist das Beherrschen der Zielsprache. Kann man sich in ihr nicht gut ausdrücken, wird die Übersetzung auch nicht gut.

Im schlimmsten Fall gibt es den Text weder online noch in einer Bibliothek. Dann muss man kreativ sein: Leute am anderen Ende der Welt anschnorren, eine bestimmte Seite zu fotografieren und zuzuschicken. Verlage/AutorInnen anschreiben und beten, dass eine Antwort kommt.
Alles schon gehabt.

In der Praxis bedeutet das, dass man regelmäßig Bibliotheken besucht, um sich oft nur die die Übersetzung für einen einzelnen Begriff zu holen. Bei weitem nicht alle Texte gibt's auch, ähem, "gratis" online.

Übersetzungen wissenschaftlicher Texte erfordern oft auch, dass man bereits bestehende kanonische Übersetzungen von Fachbegriffen übernimmt und, im besten Fall, auch versteht.
In meinem Fall geht es um Hayek, der in meinem selbst angelegten Glossar viel Platz einnimmt.

Holy shit, I found a channel with russian dubs of a few of those obscure Aum-Shinrikyo animes. Yes, that's the doomsday sect with the sarin gas attacks in Tokyo.
And yes, the animes were officialy released in Russia in the early 90s.

ÜbersetzerInnenprobleme: Das Mädchen lernt für ihren Herzbuben Japanisch und hat ihm als Anfängerin eine Nachricht geschrieben, die aber in Kinder-Krikelkrakel-Schrift verfasst ist.
Mission: So übersetzen, dass klar wird, dass sie für ihn Japanisch lernt, es aber nicht gut kann.
