The photo shows a portico entrance to the historic mansion at Cheekwood Estates & Botanical Gardens in Nashville, Tennessee. The portico features a tile floor and several arched openings along the left side. The walls and ceiling are painted in various shades of blue to mimic Horace-Bรฉnรฉdict de Saussureโ€™s cyanometer device.

The Swiss scientist and mountaineer invented the cyanometer (or cyanomรจtre) in 1789. A simple tool made to measure the blueness of the sky, it is essentially a circle of paper with gradients of Prussian blue that move from white to black in fifty-two distinct degrees of color. Saussure, along with subsequent scientifically minded explorers like Alexander von Humboldt, used the device to demonstrate that the color of the sky grows darker with increases in elevation.

COLORSCAPES, an immersive, site-specific exhibition by the acclaimed Chicago art collective Luftwerk took over Cheekwood in the summer of 2022, and this outdoor installation was called Sky Blue. The full exhibit is described and pictured here: https://cheekwood.org/calendar-events/colorscapes/

COLORSCAPES was one of my favorite exhibits at Cheekwood (Nashville) and this portion of the exhibit transformed existing architecture in the portico into a cyanometer, a simple tool invented by Swiss scientist Horace-Bรฉnรฉdict de Saussure to measure the blueness of the sky. โ˜๏ธ

My little raised garden went okay-ish. We managed one teeny meal of stunted carrots, a few small bell peppers, and a steady stream of tomatoesโ€”some with cracks, ugh. But after the first snake of the season slithered onto our porch, Iโ€™ve relied on the husband & kids to keep it watered for me.

I planted squash, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, and bell peppers. I studied the UT Extensionโ€™s gardening calendar and pretended I knew what I was doing.

Yโ€™all, I hadn't even finished adding soil before he had dug up several plots in the yard. ๐Ÿ˜‚

He doesnโ€™t respond well to nagging though (I canโ€™t imagine why) so I had mostly dropped it.

Then back in March, Costco had raised garden beds on sale.

Initially, I thought I'd just try my own hand at gardening, but knowing he doesnโ€™t like to be outdone, I told him all about my new hobby. ๐Ÿ’ช

Adolescenceโ€ฆ wow! I was simultaneously in awe of the amazing performances by this cast and at times forgot they were acting and felt crushed by the weight of this devastating story. Heart-wrenching (especially as a mom of two teens), but a must watch.

Few housekeeping items for those who are new to this kind of severe weather threat. First, know where you are on a map. Warnings are issued by polygons. If one of those polygons pops up on the map, know if you're inside or outside of the polygon. Need help? Use GPS on your phone.

When Amazon launched in 1995, there were 5,500 indie bookshops in the U.S., with 7,000 locations. By May of 2023, that number had decreased to 2,185 indies & 2,599 locations.

When you purchase audiobooks via Libro.fm vs. Audible, you directly support indie bookshops. Let's make that number grow โค๏ธ
