Just drove from Sydney to Melbourne and as usual obsessed with the odometer (an integral calculus machine!), excited that it was about to show 123456, but got distracted in thoughts and went well past that special number before I checked again! Blinked and missed an important life event!

Whatever the percentage turns out to be, should be policy priority to work on student accommodation and make these students welcome. They make a wonderful contribution to our society in so many different ways and are part of a constructive and valuable investment in future international relations

Yes, I think it is a mistake to identify overseas students with general immigration, and any housing pressures should be resolved by targeted policy on student accommodation. Then everyone benefits (including local students, who are enriched by interactions with students from overseas).

Agreed, work in the tertiary sector, most of my students are from overseas, wonderful work ethic and enrich the learning experience for everyone. Tough for them even though housing needs are minimal. Targeted policy creating more student accommodation would remove negative effects on general housing

Nothing Trump says can be relied upon, ever. He is an infantile idiot, with criminal instincts and whims and fixations that have nothing to do with reality. The US has to be quarantined until the Trump sickness has passed.

Yes, speech was painful to watch, infantile rubbish, together with a show and tell chart that would make an economics school teacher blush, rows of senior people soaking it up in the most egregious display of sycophancy. Australia must insulate itself until the Trump phase has passed. It will pass!

Yes, fine article. There is an upside if the rest of the world can quarantine the US until the Trump malaise/sickness has passed. Tariffs are actually not the greatest danger. Also the tide might be turning with the imminent demise of Musk and recent antics in Wisconsin and some rebels in the Senate

Turnbull's speech was strong, though I did not like that he said that we need to be more like Trump, the usual reference to being "transactional". Transactional implies seeking mutual benefits based on respect and integrity. Nothing like Trump! Standing up to a bully doesn't mean being a bully.
