It was a powerful show of strength and a great event. The government knew we were there and they would have felt the pressure from our presence. We heard MPPs comment that this was one of the busiest days in the Legislature, and that is because you all came out!

At our press conference, 2 patients joined our ED Natalie Mehra to share their formal complaints of being charged thousands in private for-profit clinics, yet they've heard nothing from the Ford gov't. All 3 Opposition Parties attended.

Here we are, more than four months later and not one of the 50 patients who filed the formal complaint have even been contacted to have their reports investigated.

>160 of us went to the Ontario Legislature to fill the Public Galleries & watch the Opposition ask the Health Minister & Premier why their gov't has done nothing to investigate the formal complaint that we filed last June w/50 patients who were extra-billed in private clinics.

This is just the beginning, unless we are strong enough and relentless enough to stop it.

But the Ford gov't hasn't even contacted any of the fifty patients who lodged a formal complaint with us on June 17 for being extra-billed in the for-profit surgical & diagnostic clinics that the Ford gov't has been expanding. It is now mid-October.

Ford is no longer hiding his intentions. His government is essentially building private day hospitals & they are shifting hundreds of millions in public funding over to them.

Imagine what will happen when we have 57 more private clinics – announced by Ford this summer – taking more than 100,000 diagnostic tests out of our local public hospitals, along with funding & staffing. The plan is to expand them to do surgeries.

A woman in her 80s who had to take out a loan to get her surgery & is now struggling to pay it back from her pension

A 71 year old who had to go back to work to pay for his surgery

Seniors who have been told that they have to pay $8,000, $10,000, $11,000 for their eye surgery

The suffering & inequities that led to the creation of Public Medicare are already on their way back in for elderly patients trying to get cataract surgeries. Here are some patients we've heard from...

A large petition at the federal level might be 40,000 signatures. We should have the capacity to get hundreds of thousands, at least. If we can drive the numbers up, both the federal and provincial gov’ts will have to take notice.

To that end, we have launched a petition to the federal gov’t, calling on them to enforce the CHA in Ontario where the Ford gov’t is violating it with their private clinics.

The power of the Canada Health Act is in its moral call to authority. It only works if we demand that it is enforced and if provinces that violate the bans on user fees and extra-billing are shamed into coming back into compliance.

The Canada Health Act is like a bill of rights for patients. It protects us against privatization by banning user fees, extra-billing of patients & 2-tier medicare where the rich buy care & middle income earners, seniors & low income earners get pushed back or have to go without.
