It’s time to intertwine our roots underground and share resources through the fungal networks to hold each other up stronger. Like nature. Like a community.

I will not abide by cynics who pronounce, there’s no nature in ANY city.

And I’m over petty one-upmanships—inter or intrastate.

Mother Nature is the best teacher and this made me think of one of her best lessons: the importance of community.

His attempt at an inner-state rivalry cat-fight was diffused. He made some attempted joke about Terminator 2, and I laughed. But later he came up to me to say he is curious to see nature in my city. I told him about my favorite nature spots in his city too.

Luckily I was pre chilled by the beautiful nature preserve surroundings so I didn’t clap back in kind. Instead the first words that came to mind was, “of course there is! Next time you’re in SoCal come on my LA River walk.” 😁

A few weeks ago on a nature walk near Santa Barbara the docent asked me how I knew so much about the plants. When I said “because I teach about nature too, but in LA”, a smug guy in an SF Giants hat laughed “there’s nature in LA?! Yeah right!”
