Another evening typing the book into the #AI in a format it can understand. It gave me a pretty brutal #critique on chapter 1. I ended up revising 2 times and then #rewriting it. It's important to get a really good initial #hook. You can scream at your AI and no one will here. #LiteraryFiction

In an era of extreme anti-intellectualism, this is hardly surprising. The question is whether people understand the level of intellectual skill required to stay independent in the world. Things can't be rolled back to the 1950s. Even China is way past that in advancement.

The #AI requires a set of "Codex Files" which instruct it on how to #edit. Here (if it isn't too small to read) is part of the Style Guide codex file:

These problems are a vestige of a genre fiction style where you want to entice the reader with the good stuff coming up in the book. In Literary Fiction, the psychology of the character, not the plot points are what's important.

The chapter ending is too melodramatic. I have given this #AI an explicit rule against that in it's style guide. It's easy to "try too hard" to shock the reader to the point of destroying the book's style.

It told me I had a fantastic psychological hook in the beginning of the chapter and then it points to the place where I come out of the protagonist's head and kill the tension with a bunch of science fiction expose. I basically need to spread the expose out into the book.

I also give Notebook LM the rules/instructions I gave to the human editor. The #LiteraryFiction level I write in is so high it is difficult to find an #editor than has the capability to #edit it. The agency had to go to the UK (I'm in the US) to find one qualified enough.

However, it can't tell what substyle of #LiteraryFiction I write in. A human editor discovered the style I best write in and I put their rules into the AI. The Notebook LM AI only uses the rules I give it. This is to prevent delusions. I can go discuss the rules with a general AI (Gemini).

I've written for 12 years and have had 14 professional edits. For most things, the #AI is much better because I tell it precisely the style I want to write in (list of rules) and it can view the entire chapter all at once. It doesn't get tired like a human editor and can view endless details.

It the last half of the chapter I wander into a melodramatic genre fiction style which is not what you want to show when you are trying to entice a #LiteraryFiction reader. In my case, it needs to be restrained, psychologically grounded prose.

Stunned: #AI just gave a first chapter #critique better and more useful than any human #editor has. Some actionable restructuring that makes good sense. It's like duh, why didn't I see that? The AI knows the #writing style I want to maintain and told me I violated it in the last half of the chapter.

It seems like the book to movie gold rush is over. As least from what I see. What do you see?

Even the #AI knows that North America doesn't read deep #LiteraryFiction. It says #UK, New Zealand, maybe Australia does. It's kind of sad, really. Especially since Literary Fiction generally teaches #empathy. I can confirm empathy is going away in the #US.
