I find it interesting that the one daughter is a single mom, because it sounds like that's more or less how MaryBeth raised her kids. She's just cutting out the middleman of pretending to have a spouse.

well the only adult in her life (husband) wasn't IN her life in any significant way, and the kids had no real experience with a healthy family dynamic so they couldn't tell how messed up their lives were.

Also, frankly, the other kid plotlines are very rote. Dead mom . . . dead dad . . . mental asylum . . . we've seen this before.

I often feel alienated from depictions of girlhood because they are just so outside my experience (you guys were going to parties?) but scenes of Margie watching the popular girls for cues and hamming it up for their approval is like. Yeah, I can relate to this.

So a character like Margie is interesting because she's set up to struggle with the desire to belong vs. what belonging requires of her. Especially because she's clearly Richie's mom, and he had the same plot line but with different problems.

I've said before that one of King's greatest skills is peeling apart toxic masculinity, but he is . . . less steady when it comes to girls and girlhood. (He hit a home run with Carrie and never looked back.)

So, It: Welcome to Derry is, uh, not good on multiple fronts, but by far the most interesting plot line is what they're doing with Margie.

you know what's interesting about Stranger Things? even when I see people get hyped for a new season, I rarely see them talking about things they want to see, characters they love, etc. it doesn't seem to be something people engage with narratively.

thinking about that review of the Cabaret revival that sneeringly referred to Sally's abortion as "a girlboss moment" and look, I am NOT claiming Sally Bowles as a feminist icon, but that specific decision? yes empowering actually! probably the most empowered thing she does!
