Long ago, all we had was that funny feeling, saying someday we'd send β€˜em reeling. Now it looks like we can! Someday just began . . .

if there was a rich person with the will, you could build the most incredible news organization that has ever existed just from the wreckage of this year alone.

(MaryBeth SUCKS, don't get me wrong, but Bob also sucks for basically being like "well she can hoard babies and force our older children to do the heavy lifting for her, it's not my problem because I'm never home!")

I find it interesting that the one daughter is a single mom, because it sounds like that's more or less how MaryBeth raised her kids. She's just cutting out the middleman of pretending to have a spouse.

well the only adult in her life (husband) wasn't IN her life in any significant way, and the kids had no real experience with a healthy family dynamic so they couldn't tell how messed up their lives were.

and I get it, I know what it's like to be enmeshed with your parents, but at a certain point . . .

her adult kids all seem to know the party line, but there's moments where they're caught off guard and you realize that they're all MISERABLE.

"Laura, why are all your horror stories about children in danger, usually via abusive and/or neglectful adults"
"because I was a deeply unhappy, anxious child and this is cheaper than therapy."

Last night I went to the Puca Festival in Trim, Ireland.

It's all fun and games until someone unleashes a giant demonic hare.

Also, I'm reading The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon rn, and parts are really compelling (Trisha's feelings about having to be the "good" kid to keep peace between her mom and brother) but. Steve. My man. I know you've interacted with girl children because you have one, but this is NOT how they talk.

Fact, fiction and the space between. Jovial serial killers, Violent Unexplained Events, mothers who just love gardening, teens who never leave the house. This must be the Sunday Scaries!

Who doesn't enjoy a lively dinner with unusual meats, special seasonings, and vegetables grown in that garden you can't go near, all in the company of a lovely Large Family? It must be time for another edition of the Sunday Scaries buttondown.com/daviddemchuk...

Also, frankly, the other kid plotlines are very rote. Dead mom . . . dead dad . . . mental asylum . . . we've seen this before.

03.11.2025 02:04 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I often feel alienated from depictions of girlhood because they are just so outside my experience (you guys were going to parties?) but scenes of Margie watching the popular girls for cues and hamming it up for their approval is like. Yeah, I can relate to this.

03.11.2025 02:03 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

So a character like Margie is interesting because she's set up to struggle with the desire to belong vs. what belonging requires of her. Especially because she's clearly Richie's mom, and he had the same plot line but with different problems.

I've said before that one of King's greatest skills is peeling apart toxic masculinity, but he is . . . less steady when it comes to girls and girlhood. (He hit a home run with Carrie and never looked back.)

03.11.2025 02:01 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

So, It: Welcome to Derry is, uh, not good on multiple fronts, but by far the most interesting plot line is what they're doing with Margie.

WSJ headline, over a torn LGBTQ BLM pride flag - the growing divide in the rainbow coalitoln

🚨 1/ SCOOP We all know Pamela Paul is not a good journalist. But in her (poorly argued) WSJ screed on the alleged "growing divide" in LGBTQ circles abt trans rights, she reports ESPECIALLY badlyβ€”including abt Jose Arango & his boyfriend who dumped him.

Paul didn't talk to the boyfriend.

I did.

In recent years, many young people have approached the faith through social media, successful programs and popular online Christian witnesses. The danger is that a faith discovered online is limited to individual experiences, which may be intellectually and emotionally reassuring, but never β€œembodied.” Such experiences remain β€œdisembodied,” detached from the β€œecclesial body.”

I know there's, like, hardcore fans shipping Finn Wolfhard and Zionism Is Sexy (good luck with that) and I see people saying they love Steve, but apart from that? nothing.

you know what's interesting about Stranger Things? even when I see people get hyped for a new season, I rarely see them talking about things they want to see, characters they love, etc. it doesn't seem to be something people engage with narratively.

"what if your mom had aborted you" "idk my mom was a nightclub dancer and my dad was either her gay boyfriend or their throuple partner who ran away to argentina, I'm fine with it."

30.10.2025 15:58 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

also you do not need to justify an abortion with anything other than "I don't want to be pregnant" but think for five seconds about the kind of parents Sally and Brian/Cliff would make and try to tell me she wasn't fully correct in yeeting that fetus.

30.10.2025 15:57 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

thinking about that review of the Cabaret revival that sneeringly referred to Sally's abortion as "a girlboss moment" and look, I am NOT claiming Sally Bowles as a feminist icon, but that specific decision? yes empowering actually! probably the most empowered thing she does!

Definitely recommended reading. ^_^
