You don’t need to grip summer to keep it. Carry its warmth forward. Let it stain the vineyards, silver the olives, and nourish the food.

“There’s no sadness in this death; it happens in broad daylight with a sun flooding everything with light of pure gold.”

In "The Red Vineyard" (1888), figures meld with ripe crops and dry grass. Harvest has kicked off as fields bask in lingering warmth.

Grapes lie on the ground. They look bountiful rather than tragic.

Why Literary Festivals Still Matter What does a punk drummer have to do with a scholar of caste in India, or a border reporter who has walked for years with coyotes? At first glance, almost nothing. But their work, their testimonies,…

A case for the importance of literary festivals: “The time we devote to others in person has shrunk, almost without our noticing. A festival interrupts that trend.”

One policy solution to Young Men we should be considering is Universal Basic Electric Guitar (UBEG). I'm not joking, by the way. Kids of any gender should get a low-cost starter kit for some hobby of their choosing once they turn 13. A camera, paints, a cheap sampler, etc.

Feeling increasingly frustrated and hateful towards myself before realizing construction sounds + bad music blaring all day + being hot cause the windows are closed might have something to do with it. Turned on a fan, put in ear plugs and I instantly feel much better. Sensory processing is wild lol

creativity doesn’t live in perfectly curated grids or trend-driven sameness. It lives in collaboration, in-person connection, and the kind of messy, raw work that risks failure but feels alive.

Process ☼ On Photography, by Wesley Verhoeve | Substack Weekly photography newsletter for people who want to feel proud of what they make—real talk about creative blocks, building a body of work, and showing up with your camera. Click to read Process ☼ On ...

It's a way of learning how to find and tell stories. And like any of those things, it takes repetition (...) the magic isn't in getting it right once. It's in showing up again and again.

We don't expect musicians to play perfectly without rehearsal. But somehow, with photography, it can feel like we're supposed to get it right on the first try, especially online, where everything is a performance.

But photography is a language and a craft and it takes time to develop.

Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.
