A tabletop scene in a coffee shop. On the left, a red and white plaid coffee cup from Dunn Brothers Coffee sits beside two books: Short Stories by Jesus by Amy-Jill Levine, with labeled tabs (“J.C.,” “Jesus,” “Parables,” “Rabbi”), and Love Is His Meaning: Understanding the Teaching of Jesus by Keith Ward. Behind the books is a laptop with stickers, including one that says “HOMOPHOBIA” and another referencing poverty and hunger. On the right side are a gray zippered case, a black power bank with cable, and black wireless earbuds. The setting suggests theological study or reflection.

In reality, the foundations of U.S. immigration policy are steeped in racism and white nationalist ideology. The vile, crude, overtly racist rhetoric spewing from Trump/MAGA are not aberrations from an otherwise equitable system. They reveal the fragility and fear at the heart of white patriarchy.
