Multiple of my coworkers from my last shitshow of a job were so friendly and warm when they started and they are still amazing! But I watched them become more and more miserable until they left (or I did) from constant disrespect and mismanagement

Man it is so sad to see a bad workplace just eat people. Take bright, funny, intelligent people and turn them bitter and cynical and pissed off.
