Say what you will about Trump but he got popular in exactly the same way. You never saw moderating himself to chase polls. He had one core principle (that he’s always right and should hold all the power) and he never wavered from it. He is horrific, but authentic, and his supporters love him for it.

It’s why their leadership despises the DSA: people who, on paper, agree with 99% of what the Democratic Party supports, but who have principles and actually fight to promote them rather than quietly selling their own souls to billionaires and acquiescing to fascists.
