Just arrived (fled X) and here for the eclectic: Weird lit, M.R. James, Blackwood et al, opera, folklore, baking, medieval art, architecture, theatre, Iceland (the country, not the supermarket thank you!) and food history. Just your regular, gay lefty.

More from Facil. The Charolais beef was astonishing!

A stunning dinner at Facil in Berlin with my husband. More pics to follow. Itโ€™s a 2 Michelin star restaurant, but in my opinion, better the local 3 starโ€ฆ.

Catena Zapata 2022 Malbec. Absolutely outstanding! I donโ€™t believe Iโ€™ve ever tasted a finer Malbec. And the label scores extra points for originality, with Eleanor of Aquitaine and Phylloxera symbolising the birth and death of Malbec in the old world!

Thanks for the tips. Iโ€™ve visited once before about 10 years ago, but the weather was appalling, so I saw barely anything other than Torshavn. Hopefully I will be luckier this time. Sadly I donโ€™t speak either language, but apparently Jacobsens Bรณkahandil has plenty of available texts in English.

Weโ€™re off to the Faroe Islands next month for a couple of weeks, but I really want to explore any sites that have a folkloric and/or Viking era connection. Any recommendations on relevant literature I can read, will be much appreciated. Likewise for any lesser known sites to visit.

Itโ€™s a great, sinister read David. Cornwall + Folklore are happy bedfellows! Iโ€™m glad to have discovered your work.

Recently finished Withered Hill, which was pretty much unputdownable. Halfway through Scuttlerโ€™s Cove and I may well never eat an apple again!

Great selection, I would have to go for: Joan Sutherland, Birgit Nilsson, Renata Tebaldi, Leontyne Price and Kirsten Flagstad

A few Christmas treats comprised of my very own trinity: Opera, baking and a few new additions to my Gothic/Folklore lit collection.

My first post over here! In case you donโ€™t know, my biography of M. R. James, โ€˜For the Dead Rememberโ€™, will be coming your way next year from Oxford University Press.

Sounds like my near ideal Christmas present of a haunted recipe book! Will absolutely be purchasing a copy.

Itโ€™s a big gap, so perhaps itโ€™s a couple of ingredientsโ€ฆ? Being a food historian, canโ€™t be that far away from being a hybrid of Susie Dent and Miss Marple!

This sounds rather tempting and very much akin to an Eccles cake! The inclusion of caraway seeds will give it a hint of liquorice.

A paste for shivery cakes sounds rather intriguing! Are we talking a wobbly Battenberg?!

My debut on Bluesky and already it feels so much healthier than X!

A few pics from a recent visit to the Medieval Women exhibition at @britishlibrary.bsky.social The star exhibit was the earliest of three surviving examples of Jeanne dโ€™Arcs signature, but there was much else to enjoy here.

Iโ€˜ve just finished reading Volkโ€˜s The Good Unknown, which I would highly recommend. Heโ€˜s an absolute master of the genre, a 21st century M.R. James! The Waiting Room and Lost Loved Ones are especially good.
