I keep thinking about how so-called AI is literally just time-displaced human intelligence. Bottled human decision-making, by converting human acts of perception and description into data via effective slave labor, that can be replayed for first-world elites who have given up on thinking themselves.

Who Goes Nazi?, by Dorothy Thompson
Every few months now I re-read this "Who Goes Nazi?" piece from 1941 and am blown away by how it captures the people we are dealing with 80 years later.

One of the victories of the "AI" industry is that the use of the word "intelligence" for their product has led to people conflating a massive appropriation of intellectual property for an database sorted and outputted with algorithms, with what actually happens in human brain, one artwork at a time.

This, from the Quakers, is a pretty good example of how to resist pressure from bigot lobbying groups. Effectively “we legally can allow trans people to use the loo, we morally should, and we tried it and nothing bad happened”

Cars are still a million times worse, of course. There’s no comparison.
Honestly I think we cyclists are judged even harder because we’re visibly people (to pedestrians, not sure wtf drivers think) whereas cars are anonymous machines.
I still leave 3ft for pedestrians tho.

Agreed to both you and Peter. I do think even well-meaning cyclists should be giving pedestrians more space, though … I’ve watched my riding friends treat people on foot like slalom cones and I’m just … wow.
I’ve been on the receiving end too and it’s not pleasant, even though I’m used to bikes.

I want a presidential candidate who promises to construct Union memorials and statues all over the country.
And yeah, North and South. Blanket Virginia with statues of Thomas, who actually chose the right side.
Hell, put one of Sherman in the middle of Peachtree Park.

If you want a faster ebike, get an e-motorcycle with a license plate and get licensed for road use. Maximal acceptance is going to be a demonstration of Gresham's Law: bad bikes will drive out good bikes (or all bikes).
21.08.2025 01:58 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0
Yes, this exactly. Like Russ said, people don’t even notice regular ebikes, and so aren’t going to realize how great they are for so many.
I fear a maximal e-bike acceptance strategy is only going to hurt us all in the long run. I’d be happy to accept a hard limit of like 16-18mph on them instead.

Not sure if that was his influence or not though, given how much a TV production is affected by all the hands that touch it, especially those of e.g. media execs…

If you want to be really scared, take a look at how those things basically can’t deal with cyclists (unless something has changed since last I looked) and then think on how many of their “drivers” use “autopilot”(eyeroll) all the damned time.

Start a thread about helmet pressure, or tire doping
(Autocorrect wanted that to be “tire coping” and that’s a different topic)
(Also tire doping is totally a thing, I should have said something like lycra-of-way)
