I think it’s time for Tim to leave. I blamed Ive for a lot of the recent design missteps but I think it’s Cook; he has no taste in a company that was built around having that in a CEO, and hasn’t found a suitable proxy for it.

Jamelle Bouie on the Death of the Fourth American Republic This is a great piece from Jamelle Bouie on the likely death of the Voting Rights Act and, zooming out, the end of an era in American society that began with the Act’s signing. Americans pride ourselves, by contrast, on

The Death of the Fourth American Republic. The Roberts Supreme Court means to end the fourth republic, which “began with the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, 60 years ago today”, by gutting that same act. [kottke.org]

I still wonder at the whole “our business model doesn’t work if we can’t steal the contents of all the books, and isn’t it fair to use those books since humans learn from them too?” argument.

I mean, I paid for the books I read to learn stuff.

Is the bomb discourse fear that that’s imminent? Because I may have missed this. Or is this more generally angst about the effects of US imperialism and possibly the sudden dropping off a cliff of same?

Jesus

I do also look behind me when I’m stopping in my car and often even while driving but what can you do. What’s the point even of police then?

Writing in a jokey tone to your wife is in fact one of the main benefits of having a wife. Once again, why are you outsourcing the fun part of existence to the machine.

Counterpoint: drivers constantly presume they can use the opposing lane when theirs is blocked, despite there being traffic in it and causing that traffic to veer off to the side so long as they think there’s room.

I think what’s going on is they know they can’t bully a truck/van out of their way.

This feels like a weird conflation of people who think masks plus vaccines are the way to go (because Swiss cheese theory) with … what I assume is a tiny woo cohort that I’ve been lucky enough to never see but who I assume lives rent-free in the OP's head.

Honestly I wonder how much China is paying them for this.

Which is a totally tinfoil hat thing to say but in reality it’s me trying to find any explanation other than “they’re evil just for the lulz”

Them “I was only 10 over”

Us “You mean you doubled your chance of killing someone”

(It’s more than double but drivers, they are a simple people)

(Also every time someone says “I was only X over the limit” I get all Inigo “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means”)

Hands up everyone who constantly checks over their shoulder when they’ve stopped for a light because drivers have their noses in Facebook

I am going to be a massive humorless asshole about woo-woo shit, no matter how seemingly harmless, for the rest of my life due to this. astrology, homeopathic medicine, etc etc it's all bullshit and it's not fucking harmless. there are people who will die due to this who would have otherwise lived.

Remember the case in metro west a while back when a truck driver had like 2 dozen priors and the DA and police were all working hard to convict and the jury just let him walk. (I hope the civil case result was brutal for the driver but I never checked.)

The other imaginary scenario that drivers always create is where they collide with a cyclist who is legit breaking the law and then the driver is penalized.

I mean, drivers can mow down a paceline of riders and say “yeah I did it, fuck them” and a judge will let them off to not “ruin their life”.

What kills me is how likely I judge this approach is to work, because white guy.

A sensible electorate would see a name they recognize from past BS and run the other way. But this is America

Carbon bikes often don’t trip an induction loop, but you can increase the detection signature by laying the bike more horizontally, especially if you have aluminum rims (and maybe steel spokes?).

This is mostly hearsay, I haven’t done the math, but it has worked for me.

The explanation I’d heard in the past is that that sign means “wait on the line” — the line is usually next to the sign. I might have seen bike symbols on some lines but not typically.

Sometimes there are induction loops there, and I think sometimes there are cameras instead or in addition.
