Yeah, having been around a lot of 12 step and addiction in my life at best they seem like they need to be part of a multi-pronged strategy? Therapy + meetings + etc. And I’m not sophisticated enough to parse the science but I’ve seen the argument that total abstinence isn’t a good universal approach

My only shot at liking Christmas in any capacity again is making it fun for my kid. Opting out has costs for him (and we have nothing else to opt into) so we’ll participate, but if not for him I’d happily ignore this holiday and just cook the foods I like from it on a different day.

They were, and I snuck away when their back was turned. I should add that I dislike maybe two people in all of Columbus so this was a really improbable encounter.

Parenting drives some people insane because they start trying to control things they can’t control, especially because the thing they’re trying to control changes every two weeks. I’m even guilty of this at times but I at least try and pull myself back from the brink.

Yeah newborns are surprisingly resilient and extremely straightforward needs-wise.

And listening to neurotic parents talk about how miserable they are on Reddit and generalizing that experience is the equivalent of believing the political doomers on Bluesky.

I maintain that this is the best Christmas album in no small part because the movie itself is about being sad at the holidays (a thing pop culture was allergic to depicting for a long time) but which most people are, and the album just captures that vibe perfectly

Also a quiet testament to how quietly anti-drinking I became; this was some grad school outing I was on and I was the only one not drinking, sort of hiding it with a root beer.

This could have been me at any point between 2002 and 2016; I didn’t age much between 14 and 28.
