I mean, it's like a friend asks if you could help them move out or into a house.
Would you charge them for your assistance? Not likely, you'd likely volunteer to help them if you can spare the time.
Volunteer work can be good for practice or adding to a resume, ofc depending what it is.

If you don't want to take on a certain amount of work...you don't have to! Asking to be paid for a volunteer position is just...strange to me. It's as much "work" as you want it to be!
