I figured. I wasted a lot of time trying to puzzle out the "Jesus was either a liar or a lunatic or the messiah" statement
and iirc in Screwtape when the demon advises to get the Christians when they're thinking, which is when you can infiltrate, which really turned me off tbh even as a kid

agreed...speaking as someone who was literally phone banking for him during those years and is to the left of him...
he won by being all things to all people, everyone read into him what they wanted, which is a great way to get elected and terrible for governing

Lewis was quoted all the time, as basically an authority on what it means to be a Christian, in my house

I swear, the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe would have been banned had CS Lewis been a hippie

no actually I feel...refreshed about how long ago and far away those days are now.
Man, did we ever gnash our teeth over having to defend, like, Pearl Jam to our parents.
I remember one article worrying the parents about the implications of POTTERMANIA (in all caps)

Had to go find the 1999 "review" that Plugged In (Focus on the Family's pop culture magazine, which all evangelical kids will remember well) published for "Devil Without a Cause," the album that "Bawitdaba," his hit song he performed tonight, is on ... www.pluggedin.com/album-review...

The Trump administration is the dog that caught the Caracas.

Like, if you wanna feel sad, pick your favorite artist or writer from 100 years ago and imagine them having to work it in the online algorithm universe. Imagine Faulkner having to do fake candid bedhead shots or Agatha Christie having to post fun facts to drum up engagement.

exactly
add in the years of establishing an image of power success, stir in authentic (if vulgar and stupid) ways of talking, and very simple and easy to understand premises and that's hard to beat
compared to actually having to do real politics, with nuance and negotiation and compromise

I think you're really hitting on something here
maybe bc people don't want to have to defend their actually voting for these people in public, around the water cooler, whatever
it's easier to accept the caricature of MAGA than the one for the left
macho vs. whiny, decisive v. dithering etc.

Besides the splendid @roncharles.bsky.social and @johnwilliams.bsky.social and Becca Rothfeld, I'm thinking about former editors Nina King and Marie Arana and Jabari Asim and Michael Dirda. Book World has long had a unique and often surprising voice. What a terrible loss.

pointing out the all staggering hypocrisy is a good start
and the careless disregard for anyone other than them
and the hoarding of all the money and cutting jobs to make even more of it
I'd tell any candidate to have fun with it, make fun, roast em, put the GOP on the defensive and don't stop

because the right wing ideology is traditional, simple, consistent, and sounds good if you don't think about it too much
left ideology is complex, nuanced, and constantly changing. it makes more sense the more you think about it
