And people make a big deal about candidates dropping out before Super Tuesday 2020 as if it was some conspiratorial betrayal, which speaks to how they didn't really have a legit plan for victory, apparently expecting to just slide into a plurality thanks to the moderate vote being split 4-5 ways?

Like, it's no secret that black voters are pretty much the key to winning the Dem primary and bro barely even TRIED getting their votes and if anything seemed to sabotage himself (notice how he'd almost always avoid framing racism as a salient issue & tried to tie everything back to class struggle)

Something that hit me in 2020 was how he literally just ran the same campaign as 2016 thinking that would be enough, rather than looking for possible weak points and trying to expand his base — instead his base stayed pretty much the same and he performed even worse for it

tbf if Wheatley just being metal bowling ball is a problem but GLaDOS being a ceiling-mounted swiveling chassis isn't a problem, then maybe we just need to start sexualizing this Wheatley:

That, and the fact that he allowed people from the center of the party into his Presidency for the sake of unity (Hillary as Secretary of State, Biden as VP) meant that any of his successors were going to have a weaker reputation than him, and eventually their borrowed goodwill would run out

It's kinda telling that he won *twice* while Democrats as a whole were getting trashed in the midterms — his popularity couldn't extend to the rest of the party because the party largely never changed to match him (or at least, reshaping it in his image wasn't a priority for him)

Sure, they weren't able to do as much as they could have (DC statehood, for example), but it was legitimately good progress, even if it had to be compromised

It'd be better to not have the Senate *at all* but this is the kind of bullshit you end up with under non-proportional representation

honestly sometimes it's just about getting that 50 count so they can control who sits on the various committees, but to give them a bit more credit, Biden was able to get a fair amount of legislation passed thanks to that Senate majority, which itself was thanks to Manchin and the runoffs in Georgia

(which is why primary elections are important!! Adams only got the nomination in 2021 after eight rounds of elimination and slid in with a total of 50.4% of the votes)

tbf i think it depends on the region — I can't see anyone left of Manchin getting elected in West Virginia (and if you want any chance in having a Senate majority, by the nature of geography you're going to have to appeal to conservatives) BUT New York could have absolutely done better than Adams

I think that 1991-2001 period set the stage, bc without the Cold War, news orgs were desperate to elevate any scandal into a full-blown crisis that demanded 24hr coverage

So when *actual* crises happened with the War on Terror, all restraint was out the window and it was sensationalism from then on

but most people will still probably just ignore it and not want to get involved
