Some people unwind on Saturday nights. I think about Wild Alaska Pollock⦠how one humble, sustainable fish keeps showing up in school lunches, global markets, and American jobs. Not a bad companion, honestly.

Opinion: One night outside provides a lifetime of perspective
Alaskaβs homeless and at-risk youths are just kids β and Covenant House gives them a real path to safety and hope.
This time of year I think it's worth taking time to reflect on all the good we can do for others. Alaska has more extremes than most places, and this place works best when we show up for others.

My take "goods and services cost money even if they're public goods" is still incredibly unpopular.

Jobs brought most of my transplant friends here. Schools and childcare (and sometimes better jobs) have consistently been what sends them out of state.

I find it interesting when people think the solution to negative net migration is keeping more kids (who grew up here, have family here, understand the place, and have a good idea of the opportunities & want to leave) here, rather than finding more people who want what AK is offering.

Childcare is a big deal for keeping transplants up here. "Figure it out" works when Grandma lives in town. "Figure it out" for a transplant means moving back to the Lower 48.

Saw a take that most of the base of any statewide sales or income tax is mostly the Anchorage metro area - and that would make the politics of spending elsewhere interesting. Something I knew but hadn't thought enough about #akleg

I'm giving up my bed for one night in solidarity with youth overcoming homelessness at Covenant House.
I'm joining the Covenant House Alaska sleep out, and right now there is a dollar for dollar match to provide their kids (who are disproportionately LGBTQ, Alaska Native and/or young mothers) with housing & education. Please donate!
