Every Christmas, we have a family game of Risk. Always rather scary. The gentle and peace-loving Mrs C transforms into Genghis Khan, ruthlessly conquering the world nation by nation. I never win.

Anyone share my interest in the rise and fall of words? When and why did “multiple” become so dominant, now often elbowing out words like “many”, “several”, “lots”, “a number of”? And in so many different contexts. What makes a word triumph - and then maybe later fall?
