Today's M8.8 (orange circle) and the 1952 M9.0 epicentral locations, separated by only 73 years. I wouldn't have thought that possible! Average recurrence intervals don't tell the full story. ⚒️

This seasonal estuary fill > breach > drain > close cycle can frequently result in some counterintuitive hydrology, where estuarine water levels are *higher* in summer (when low flows from the watershed pile up behind the closed inlet) than they are in winter (when high flows breach the inlet).

It appears that the magnitude 7.4 #earthquake of the 20th of July was a foreshock for the Mw 8.7 to 8.8 of today offshore #Kamchatka.
Both seem to have broken the #megathrust where the Pacific oceanic plate subducts under Asia.

Macinnes et al. (2010) rupture zones

The aftershock zone of today’s M8.8 Kamchatka megathrust #earthquake is comparable to the rupture area of the 1952 rupture zone from Macinnes et al. (2010). At a rate of 8 cm/year, the accumulated slip of 6 m since 1952 matches with the preliminary rupture model of today’s earthquake pretty well. 🧪⚒️

Tide gauge at Kahului

The aftershock sequence of the M7.4 foreshock (in purple) of July 20th overlaps with the epicenter of today’s M8.8 Kamchatka megathrust #earthquake (aftershocks in pink). The largest #tsunami amplitude measured by tide gauges was probably 1.7 m (from 0 to peak) at Kahului, Hawaii. 🧪⚒️
