The problem is that Cook has optimised the business so much that there really isn't any easy growth left available, so they have to either rest on their laurels or give into investor pressure and start making risker bets.

I dunno where the Vision Pro sits in Apple's financials but the Watch and HomePod and other accessories business made $35B in FY25; Mac only made $33B. With 48% margins its a great business.

It's just never going to compare to the iPhone, which basically blows the rest of the business away.

Yeah that's probably an accurate assessment as much as it disappoints me. Feels like the tail wagging the dog.

You can see the logic; Creative Nomad is the niche, iPod proved the huge market. Occulus / Index is the niche, Vision Pro will prove the huge market. But they clearly didn't test the market well enough.

Yeah I feel like maybe that was the tipping point for Apple's product prowess. There was definitely the potential for a market but they clearly misjudged the TAM; I can't believe they would ever deliberately release a niche product like the VPro.

... and the rest of the market are tiny niches. There just isn't a market for this stuff. The Meta glasses are for weird creeps. This feels like Apple feeling threatened by whatever nonsense Jony and Open AI are cooking. They're chasing hype. Something is rotten indeed. //

... The iPhone was the obvious exception to this, but the pattern was there with the iPhone, AirPods, the Watch, Vision Pro. Find something people will pay for and make it better.

I don't believe anyone has demonstrated people actually want this. Humane was a catastrophic failure... 2/..

The wild thing is Apple used to be the company famous for late entry to new markets. They would let the early entrants to a market demonstrate what was good and bad about a new technology, then refine ruthlessly. Importantly the early entrants proved there *was* a market. 1/..

Take milk to the counter. Scans at $6.99.

โ€œThat price is wrong, it said $5.99 on the label.โ€

Manager goes to verify price. Shows them $9.99. Or $4.99.

It just doesnโ€™t scale. Amazon proved with Go you need dozens and dozens of third world workers doing surveilance to make it work.

About Us - Center for AI and Everybody about AI and Everybody We believe in AI - but only when everybody is included. We're a 501 (c)(3) center based out of Chicago, Illinois. We're focused on building and supporting a world where AI works...

So for a start the author has basically written this an advertorial for his own nonprofit. But it doesnโ€˜t look like either of the people involved are qualified to make claims about the value or utility of AI. Theyโ€™re functionally boosters. www.aieverybody.org/about-us-2/

Yup, this example is counter to how tech has colonised education settings in every previous wave, and deserves serious skepticism. Even now the poor and middle class kids have lessons delivered on iPads and Chromebooks so theyโ€™re โ€œtech readyโ€ while rich kids get Steiner schools.

The old 60% research, 60% teaching, 40% admin load? Or is it 80/80/50 now?

I knew I had to get out of academia when my supervisors took leave to work on the papers they didn't have time to write despite working 80 hour weeks.

I'm in the same boat โ€” I can't understand how Labor has continued to let our two speed economy get worse and worse.

The wealthy are rewarded for spending with higher rates. Everyone else suffers.

The productivity commission have only curtailed productivity.

We need policy to fix it.

Look the rest of the world understood the CIA world factbook was propaganda but it was propaganda with *utility*. Iโ€™m Australian but I used it all the time and I will miss it. More evidence the Trump admin doesnโ€˜t understand soft power.

Personally I hope this marks the beginning of the end for FIFA, a blatant project of colonising capital. Fetid with corruption and built on the blood and exploited dreams of the poor.

the way a government treats refugees is very instructive as it shows you how they would treat the rest of us if they thought they could get away with it.

It was positioned as AirBnB for business even though AirBnB's greatest trick was not holding any of the assets they rented. They were structurally different but Neumann and the far too credulous media treated them as equals.

Oh WeWork was 100% a tech story. Neumann positioned WeWork as a tech play rather than real estate in order to justify the insane valuation, which is why Son invested in the first place.
